Charles Bassey’s Debut Highlights Warriors’ Frontcourt Needs

The Golden State Warriors brought in former Boston Celtics center Charles Bassey to add frontcourt depth ahead of the playoffs.

The 25-year-old big man was signed yesterday ahead of the Warriors’ clash with the Houston Rockets and debuted instantly. Bassey brings much-needed size to a Golden State roster dealing with injuries as the team prepares for a strong playoff push. With the Warriors sitting 10th in the Western Conference with only 36 wins, securing a player like Bassey could prove valuable for frontcourt depth, despite playing for four different teams this season.

Bassey Joins the Warriors

Bassey finalized a deal to join the Warriors after his second 10-day contract with the Celtics expired.

The 6-foot-10 center has played in just eight games this season, but he could prove vital for Golden State amid an injury crisis affecting big men Al Horford and Quinten Post. With four games remaining in the regular season, Bassey could offer valuable support alongside another former Celtics player, Kristaps Porziņģis.

Career and Recent Form

The veteran center has played for multiple NBA teams throughout his career. He was selected with the 53rd overall pick in the 2021 NBA Draft by the Philadelphia 76ers, before later joining the San Antonio Spurs, Memphis Grizzlies and Boston Celtics. Despite limited opportunities with those teams, Bassey has made much of his impact in the G League. Most recently, he suited up for the Santa Cruz Warriors, meaning he’s no stranger to life in the Bay or the Warriors organization.
This season, Bassey has averaged 20.5 points across 20 games while shooting an efficient 60.6% from the field. He also brings qualities the Warriors have lacked at times, particularly size and rim protection. Averaging 12.5 rebounds per game, Bassey led the G League in rebounding this season, further highlighting his dominance in the paint. With Golden State among the smaller teams in the NBA, acquiring him could prove more important than initially expected.

In his Warriors debut last night, Bassey showcased his defensive prowess, recording two blocks while scoring five points on 100% shooting from the field. He played 10 minutes, an increase from previous outings, and will look to build on that as the season winds down.

Why is Bassey Joining the Warriors?

Signing the Nigerian center, Bassey, represents a smart move from the Dubs. Following the expiration of Turkish big man Omer Yurtseven‘s 10-day contract on Friday night, Golden State was in need of a backup big, especially with the ongoing injury crisis.
With four games remaining in the regular season, the Warriors have already secured a play-in spot. While a direct playoff berth is out of reach, the return of Stephen Curry alongside the addition of Bassey gives Golden State much-needed rotation help and the opportunity to build momentum heading into the postseason.
The Dubs are preparing for a tough postseason ahead, but with their new addition, they might have finally found an answer in the frontcourt.
