A Healthy Jalen Williams Brings a New Dynamic to OKC

While the OKC Thunder have seen a slew of injuries this season, they are finally getting ready for the postseason chase. Now that a healthy Jalen Williams is back in the lineup, OKC is a brand new team to be feared by many others. It’s been a rollercoaster for the Thunder, but they look strong enough to repeat as NBA champions.

Say what you will about the Thunder’s potential to break the regular-season win record. This team has endured most of the season without all of its core players together, and J-Dub’s return means a lot for the defending champs. He’s injecting a whole new layer to the Thunder as the regular season winds down.

A Healthy Jalen Williams Brings a New Dynamic to OKC

Williams played on a minutes restriction in OKC’s win over the Philadelphia 76ers. He dropped 18 points, six assists, and four rebounds in 20 minutes. That stat line is incredibly close to his season averages, and it shows that he’s back to his usual self. But there’s more to his return than most people think, and it’s even more valuable for their chances at repeating.

J-Dub is Blending with a Revitalized Thunder Squad

The last time Williams played, he was running the floor with an OKC team dealing with a post-title hangover. He was also recovering from a broken wrist. J-Dub took his time, but his first return was somehow rushed.

So far, it’s safe to say the Thunder have evolved during their winning streak. They’ve been fighting without their best players and are showing a new blend of play. For starters, they’re less reliant on Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. This means less pressure on the MVP and more buckets for everyone else.

With J-Dub back in the lineup, this just keeps getting better. We all know how Williams alleviates the ball-handling pressure on SGA. But now that OKC is capable of running its offense without depending on Shai’s iso, Williams is an added threat on the floor. He’s able to create shots on his own, and his elite off-ball navigation is a blessing for the Thunder.

Getting Used to the New Rotation

If you’ve been watching OKC hoop for the last 12 games, you can notice a massive change in their rotation. We’ve seen less of Lu Dort as of late. Ajay Mitchell is getting more minutes since he returned, and Jared McCain is slowly becoming a staple in the rotation, even in late-game situations. By now, no one can compare this team to the version we saw before the All-Star break.

In fact, we’re looking at a much better group. Before the break, OKC was boasting a 107.9 defensive rating. Yes, that’s already a great number, but ever since they made some adjustments, the Thunder’s defense now stands at a staggering 105.5. With J-Dub back, they’re adding another player with enough length to guard big men.

In the coming games, expect to see more of Williams’ explosive playmaking and offense. That defense-to-offense game will come soon for the Thunder. What better time for them to be at full strength than with J-Dub putting up All-Star numbers again?

Williams May Be the Key to a Thunder Repeat

Despite many criticisms about his game, everyone should be convinced that OKC isn’t winning a title without J-Dub. Let the 40-point explosion in Game 5 of the NBA Finals do all the talking. Now, Williams is back, and the Thunder are playing at a much better pace. Bringing him back when it matters most is a win for the defending champs.

If Williams comes up better in the postseason (especially with no more injuries), then the league is in trouble. For the first time in a long while, we may be seeing OKC emerge healthier in the final ten games of the season. Who knows how well they can play when they’re in sync with no health issues?

Don’t discount the effect that J-Dub brings to the table. Without him, the Thunder wouldn’t have a title since moving to Oklahoma City. Now that he’s healthier than ever, the rest of the league better watch out.
