NEW YORK – The NBA is taking its biggest midseason spectacle in a bold new direction. Commissioner Adam Silver recently confirmed that the 2026 NBA All-Star Game will pit Team USA against Team World in a “USA vs. World” formats. The announcement came during Silver’s appearance on NBC’s Breakfast Ball, marking a shift toward international engagement for the league.

This development arrives as NBC prepares to broadcast the All-Star Game for the first time since reacquiring NBA media rights. The move aligns with the network’s Olympic coverage, blending global competition with domestic stars. The game will tip off in the afternoon, with Olympic-themed events scheduled before and after.

Silver acknowledged in April that the league had already begun discussing a national team-based format. That vision will become reality in 2026. The “USA vs. World” All-Star game aims to recapture fan interest and improve ratings, which have fluctuated in recent years.

The league’s recent experiments struggled to gain traction. In 2025, the NBA introduced a four-team mini-tournament. However, the format drew only 4.7 million viewers—one of the lowest-rated All-Star events in league history. That version followed a brief 2024 return to East vs. West and a years-long stretch using the captains-pick format.

By contrast, the 2024 NBA All-Star Game in Indianapolis reached 5.5 million viewers. While that number showed promise, Silver and league officials remained unsatisfied with the product. As global interest in basketball grows, the NBA sees a strategic opportunity to connect with fans outside the U.S

Learning from the NHL

The NBA’s All-Star strategy now mirrors a trend that recently boosted the NHL’s visibility. The NHL’s 4 Nations Face-Off, introduced in 2025, delivered 4.4 million viewers during the U.S.–Canada opener. That format generated more excitement than the league’s traditional All-Star Game, which averaged fewer than 1.4 million viewers in 2024.

NBA decision-makers took notice. With international stars now household names, the league believes an All-Star Game with national pride on the line will resonate globally. Silver hopes the  “USA vs. World” All-Star game brings the same ratings boost seen in hockey.

Players and Partners Embrace the Shift

Many players have already supported the move to an international format. Giannis Antetokounmpo, Victor Wembanyama, and Draymond Green each endorsed the Team USA vs. Team World concept during the 2025 All-Star festivities. These endorsements reflect a shared belief that competition will improve when stakes feel real. It could be the NBA’s loosely-similar Ryder’s Cup.

Broadcasters agree. NBC, which has a vested interest in Olympic programming, welcomed the international concept. The timing works well: the 2026 All-Star Game falls within the 2026 winter Olympics in Milan. That could draw an international audience to the NBA’s foremost

Risks and Rewards of a Global Matchup

Some questions remain. The most pressing: Can Team World actually compete? While global talent continues to rise, Team USA still boasts deeper All-Star caliber depth. An unbalanced game could hurt the product.

Still, the league believes excitement will outweigh competitive imbalance. With stars like Luka Dončić, Nikola Jokic, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, and Wembanyama, Team World won’t lack firepower. Silver and his team are betting that a meaningful, international rivalry will restore the intensity once associated with the NBA All-Star Game.

By setting the next event at the Intuit Dome in Los Angeles on February 15, 2026, the NBA aims to combine tradition and innovation in the media capital of the world.

The Global Future of the All-Star Game

As the league prepares for 2026, the new format feels like more than a novelty. It’s a test of whether the NBA can reshape its midseason event into something truly global. With players, networks, and fans all eager for something new, the “USA vs. World” All-Star Game may represent the next step in basketball’s worldwide expansion.
