Chauncey Billups is happy with the Trail Blazers' development.

Chauncey Billups Sees the Blazers’ Potential Amidst Recent Losses

The Portland Trail Blazers’ potential is always a good talking point because of their promising players. Portland’s results have improved recently as the players become more integrated into the Chauncey Billups’ system. Progress continues with Portland’s rebuild, and the head coach sees more promising signs.

Chauncey Billups Sees the Blazers’ Potential Amidst Recent Losses

Many fans considered the 2024-25 NBA season another “tanking” campaign for the Trail Blazers. That has not been the case because the team is working to get wins. This is good progress for the team even though they might miss extra balls in the Draft Lottery.

That is not an issue for head coach Chauncey Billups, who wants to keep seeing progress from the team. Portland’s rebuild is progressing well, as young players like Scoot Henderson and Shaedon Sharpe are learning. Development was the team’s primary goal in the 24-25 campaign, and it turned out well.

Billups’ System is Helping the Players Develop

It has not been the prettiest of head coaching stints for Billups in Portland. Ravaged by injuries and a long-term rebuild, Chauncey does not have the best numbers. However, he can be proud of how much he has done when it comes to helping young players develop. This is evident with Scoot, Shaedon, Toumani Camara, and even Deni Avdija.

Portland’s head coach wants the team to play hard-nosed defense. Billups was part of a system that made their bread and butter with the Detroit Pistons in the 2000s. That worked out well for Billups and his teammates because they were the 2004 champions and became perennial contenders.

Chauncey wants to do that in Portland but has spent most of his tenure helping with development. The front office is seeing progress, which could prompt them to pick up his team option for a fifth season. The team has shown promising signs this season, especially on the defensive end, as they are becoming an exciting squad.

Billups is Proud of How the Team Has Performed This Season

The discourse surrounding Portland’s team has always been about the Blazers’ potential. It has always been the primary topic because they sent franchise icon Damian Lillard away to Milwaukee. He was the ultimate loyal star, but his timeline did not fit within the team’s situation. Now, the team is rolling out a young core with Henderson, Sharpe, Camara, and Donovan Clingan.

Since January 19, they have a 19-12 record. Those are some great numbers because they show real progress and development. Billups has done a great job motivating his players, especially with Henderson. He has picked it up considerably, especially with his three-point shooting, hitting at a 36.5% clip.

This recent stretch has even led to Avdija putting up borderline All-Star numbers. It is an impressive performance from the 24-year-old wing, who has met expectations after a considerable trade package. The Blazers’ most recent result was a loss to the defending champions, Boston Celtics. It was a rough loss, but Billups was immensely proud of how the team did.

“We played good, I was happy with how we played. We had some breakdowns in our defense a little bit, they kinda played DC off the floor. But, that’s the world champions, man. Championship pedigree,” Billups said after losing to Boston. “I was very happy with how we played this game, to be honest with you. Didn’t turn it over too much, did a pretty good job on the glass.”

Portland’s front office should be happy with how the team has been playing recently. They might not have a high lottery pick in the 2025 NBA Draft, but they have progressed well. Billups is glad about his players’ development, which bodes well for their confidence in the future.
