Grizzlies Remain Interested in Jimmy Butler Despite His Disinterest

Jimmy Butler was suspended by the Miami Heat yet again this past Wednesday. He missed a team flight so the team suspended him for two games. This comes after he recently returned from a seven-game suspension for conduct detrimental to the organization.

Grizzlies Remain Interested in Jimmy Butler Despite His Disinterest in Memphis

It’s becoming more and more clear that the relationship between Butler and the Heat is falling apart. As the days continue to pass, it is looking increasingly likely that a split is the most probable outcome. Butler has reportedly reiterated to the team that he would still like to be traded after returning from his previous seven-game suspension. With this ongoing saga continuing to be a distraction for the team, the Heat will soon likely come to the conclusion that the best decision for the organization is to send Butler elsewhere.

Trade Speculation Intensifies

After the two-game suspension was announced, speculation continued to grow throughout the media. Analysts and fans began building out potential trade destinations for Butler. Credible reports also confirmed that Butler wants to be traded out of Miami and is open to going anywhere—except Memphis.

Logically, that makes little sense. The Grizzlies are one of the few teams that could realistically trade for Butler and immediately become championship contenders. With other teams, such as the Phoenix Suns, acquiring Butler would require a Herculean effort. The Suns would need to make significant sacrifices and develop chemistry just to compete in the Western Conference. Meanwhile in Memphis, Butler would be a plug-and-play piece, making the Grizzlies instant contenders.

The notion that Butler does not want to play in Memphis is baffling. Maybe he just does not want to live in the city. Perhsps he has a strained relationship with someone on the team or staff. There must be a reason, but the talent and ability of the Grizzlies’ roster is definitely not one of them.

Grizzlies Still in the Mix For Jimmy Butler

Despite Butler’s apparent disinterest in joining the Grizzlies, it was surprisingly reported that Memphis is still considering making a move for him. The Grizzlies appear interested in adding a star player this season while also looking to offload some salaries to create cap space for a Jaren Jackson Jr. extension next season.

From Butler’s perspective, it is clear that he is willing to opt out of his player option this summer and become a free agent if necessary. This presents risks for Memphis, as they could trade for him without long-term security. However, if their primary objective is to clear salary for Jackson’s extension, Butler could be viewed as more of a short-term luxury than the centerpiece of the deal.

A Risk Worth Taking For The Grizzlies?

Trading for Butler without a guarantee he will stay long-term is not unprecedented. The Philadelphia 76ers took a similar gamble when they traded for Butler during the 2018-19 season. That Sixers team, led by Butler, Joel Embiid, and Ben Simmons, was eliminated in the Eastern Conference semifinals by the Toronto Raptors in Game 7, courtesy of Kawhi Leonard’s infamous buzzer-beater in the corner.

That Raptors team went on to win the championship. They defeated the Milwaukee Bucks in the Eastern Conference Finals and the Golden State Warriors in the NBA Finals. The 76ers had a legitimate chance to win the title that year, pushing the eventual champions to the brink. In fact, Philadelphia took that Raptors team to a Game 7.  That was the farthest any team pushed them during their championship run.

Ultimately, Butler left the 76ers to join Miami, but that trade proved that taking a long shot can sometimes pay off. The ironic part is that the Raptors were in a similar situation with Leonard. They only had him for one season, but they still won the championship. That proves that sometimes the risk is worth it.

The Butler-Miami saga remains one of the most intriguing storylines in the NBA. Whether the Heat decide to move him or attempt to salvage the relationship, the next few weeks will be crucial in determining Butler’s future.
