According to recent reports from multiple credible sources, Jimmy Butler has reportedly expressed no interest in becoming a Memphis Grizzlies player. The Grizzlies are one of the reported teams that have been informed not to pursue a trade for him.
Butler is currently in the final year of his deal, with a $52.4 million player option for the upcoming season. However, he is seeking long-term security and prefers a new contract rather than playing out his current player option. This contractual situation has contributed to the deterioration of his relationship with the Miami Heat, allowing him to use his leverage with potential trade partners. He has the power to refuse to sign an extension with teams he does not want to join.

Why Jimmy Butler’s Disinterest in the Memphis Grizzlies Doesn’t Add Up
It is puzzling that Butler is unwilling to entertain the idea of joining the Grizzlies. However, the real question is whether the Grizzlies should even consider trading for him. Memphis boasts one of the deepest rosters in the NBA, striking an ideal balance between youth and experience. They have all the ingredients of a championship contender, including shooting, offensive star power, and cornerstone defensive anchors.
Statistically, the Grizzlies are dominant. They rank second in points per game, second in rebounds per game, and fifth in field goal percentage. Furthermore, they are the only team in the league with a top-five rating in both offense and defense. Butler’s reluctance to join such a well-rounded team is perplexing. From Memphis’ perspective, trading away key players to acquire a 35-year-old Butler, who demands a contract extension, risks disrupting the strong nucleus they have built. Moreover, there is no evidence that Butler can return to the elite form he showcased during the Heat’s deep playoff run in the 2022-23 season.
Butler’s Preference for the Phoenix Suns
Another baffling aspect of the reports is that Butler reportedly prefers a trade to the Phoenix Suns. This is a Suns team currently sitting 12th in the Western Conference, with a 3-7 record in their last 10 games. Compared to the Grizzlies, the Suns are far less complete as a team. For the Suns to execute a trade for Butler, they would likely need to send Bradley Beal to a third team or directly to Miami. This scenario would require another team willing to absorb Beal’s substantial contract. Additionally, it would also require Beal to waive his no-trade clause. According to Beal’s agent, this is highly unlikely. The agent has stated that Beal’s sole focus is on helping the Suns climb out of their current slump. As a result, Butler’s dream of forming a “Big Three” with Kevin Durant and Devin Booker in Phoenix appears to be just that—a fantasy.
Memphis Grizzlies Are Better Off Without Butler
In hindsight, the Grizzlies may be dodging a bullet by not pursuing Butler. At 35 years old, he is an aging player demanding a long-term extension despite being past his prime. The Grizzlies’ greatest strength lies in their depth, which would undoubtedly be compromised in a trade for Butler. They already possess a roster capable of competing with the best teams in the West. Their primary concern should be staying healthy. If they can get their core players back and maintain health through the stretch of the season, the Grizzlies will remain a formidable force in the Western Conference—even without making any moves at the trade deadline.
