When Karl-Anthony Towns was traded on a random Friday night (trade officially went through five days later) before training camp to the New York Knicks, it came as a surprise to everyone. After a summer of Julius Randle trade rumors had calmed down, NY looked like they’d roll with their current roster. Although Minnesota had future cap flexibility issues, and Towns to NYC had long been discussed, it was still stunning to see both franchises shake things up right before the season. Towns was clearly heartbroken about leaving the community he’d built up in the Twin Cities before he was able to deliver a championship. However, he was sent to his hometown team, where he clearly fit both the city and the roster. This move was expected to raise the Knicks ceiling, and it’s done just that.
In fact, Towns’ historic first half in New York earned him a place on the iconic SLAM Magazine cover, becoming the latest Knick to receive that honor.
Towns Feature on SLAM Cover After Historic First Half
From John Starks to Latrell Spreewell to Jeremy Lin to Derrick Rose and Jalen Brunson, Knicks players are no stranger to SLAM Magazine. They are a storied franchise with many historic players, as well as a city that breathes basketball. The latest Knicks edition featured Brunson, Josh Hart, and Donte DiVincenzo as Villanova teammates turned New Yorkers. Unfortunately, DiVincenzo never got to take the floor with Towns, as he was sent to Minnesota in the deal.
Although Knicks fans miss Randle and DiVincenzo, KAT has more than made up for it with his historic play. He has lifted their offense to new heights with his incredible skill and smooth fit next to Brunson and company. Individually, Towns has had the most efficient season of his career, while also being second in the league in rebounding. If the Knicks weren’t championship contenders before the deal, they certainly are now, and fans have Towns to thank.

Towns is a native of Edison, New Jersey, roughly an hour’s drive from Madison Square Garden, the world-famous arena he now calls home. For KAT, putting on a Knicks jersey means something, and it has been felt equally by the fanbase that is usually so harsh on its stars. Brunson and Towns have formed a duo that is universally accepted by the Knick faithful, and have earned every bit of that praise. Even Carmelo Anthony wasn’t loved by all corners of the Garden crowd, but these guys are. Sure, there is still almost half a season yet before the true test: the postseason. New York should have several chances at a title with this pairing, but for now, they are beloved.
KAT is Having the Best Season of His Career
Towns is averaging 25.1 points, 13.9 rebounds, and 3.5 assists in 40 games. These marks rank second, first, and fifth in his career. However, his efficiency numbers are what stand out for their historic nature. Towns is doing this on 54.5 % from the field, 43.3% from three, and 65.5% true shooting, all career bests. It’s no surprise for the guy who has hit more threes at a better percentage than any center ever.
His value to the Knicks goes far beyond just these incredible numbers. Towns has upgraded New York’s offense to a championship level (second in ORTG), obliterating any concerns of the previous roster. He’s provided a perfect pick-and-roll partner for Brunson and completely fixed NY’s spacing by replacing Randle. KAT has also been a solid isolation and post player. He’s even flashed his playmaking chops when he’s had the chance. On many nights, Towns has been the team’s best player, which was rarely the case over Brunson’s first two years. Later tonight, he’s likely to be selected as an All-Star starter, the Knicks first since Anthony in 2016.
Some may say it’s silly to give credence to a magazine cover, but SLAM has always showcased players who deserve love for their contribution to winning. Of course, Towns is becoming a cultural icon for New York fans. Towns’ play though is what has earned him a spot on the SLAM cover. Knicks fans can only hope it continues.
