Tyler Herro now no longer belongs to the Miami Heat, his NBA home of seven years. The Heat gave away Herro, decorated on a silver platter, to the Milwaukee Bucks in a blockbuster deal for Giannis Antetokounmpo. But Herro can’t catch a break as his future still hangs in limbo., with the Bucks reportedly open to rerouting him elsewhere.
Why is Tyler Herro’s Future in Flux After the Heat-Bucks Trade?
Is Herro Yet to Reach His Destined Designation?
According to The Athletic’s Sam Amick, “Herro is believed to have a robust market, with the Detroit Pistons among the many teams interested in him.” As the trade between the Bucks and Heat will be finalized on July 6, changes — including the addition of players — could be made. At the moment, the Pistons need someone to look after ball-handling and secondary playmaking.
Cade Cunningham and Jalen Duren haven’t reached their full potential in Detroit. Herro can take care of these and other responsibilities while providing additional defense. He has been connected to the Pistons for some time now. His on-court support to Cunningham could be proven beneficial in improving the team’s perimeter scoring.
Herro’s Indispensable Value Persists
Before the Giannis trade went down, the former 13th overall pick was reportedly tied to other teams, from the Memphis Grizzlies to the New Orleans Pelicans. Within the Grizzlies‘ roster, some of their players, like Taylor Hendricks and Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, may be on the verge of leaving in free agency. For the Pelicans, Herro could be a great replacement for Jordan Poole, whose contract is set to expire next season.
While the Bucks are open for business, the chances of keeping Herro are not bad, either. As their primary scorer, he will effectively space the floor with his strong perimeter shooting. He is also in the prime of his career and has mostly recovered from injuries, increasing his chances of playing more games compared to this past season. His fit with the Bucks is also a more sensible one, as the Wisconsin native’s NBA achievements are merrily celebrated in his hometown. Herro has reportedly been happy about being traded to Milwaukee.
Despite his limited appearances last season, Herro continues to be an important player as the Bucks utilize him as the biggest bargaining chip for elite acquisitions. The franchise understands that his potential may have been eclipsed due to injuries, but when in form, he roars loudly and contributes to overall success. Now, wherever he may be headed, Herro has the opportunity for a fresh start and to deliver an upgrade to his new team.
Miami Heat and Tyler Herro Move On Post-Trade
As for his former squad, the Heat have already secured a guard for themselves. Miami acquired Ryan Conwell in the second round of the 2026 NBA Draft. The 22-year-old is a University of Louisville alum, and his draft rights were traded by Oklahoma City to Miami in exchange for the No. 41 pick and cash considerations.
Leaving the Heat has been a painful journey for Herro, whose last days with the team were sour and complex. However, so far, he has yet to formally speak out on his move to Bucks. Herro has been using his social media on occasion for this topic, and recently, in an X post, wrote “414,” which is Milwaukee’s area code. This subtle nod toward his transfer conveys acceptance of his move.
The Heat have moved on and are significantly improving this offseason. Herro, despite his immense love for the Heat, looks to be doing the same as he awaits certainty within the league.
