The Portland Trail Blazers are set for a massive offseason, which could include a deal for Giannis Antetokounmpo. It would be an interesting reunion between Antetokounmpo and Damian Lillard. As the potential Blazers trade becomes popular, Giannis’ fit in Portland is gaining more attention.
Insider Says Giannis Antetokounmpo Would ‘Consider’ Blazers Trade
In the past, there were already rumblings of Giannis potentially moving to the Trail Blazers. However, the primary argument against the trade has been the superstar’s contract. He will have only one year left on his deal, and he is not giving any assurances that he will re-sign with a team or at least pick up his player option. That could mean this potential Blazers trade could only last for one year.
Despite the contract concerns, there’s some reason for optimism. NBA insider Chris Haynes revealed that Portland may not be out of the running for Giannis just yet.
“I do believe if Portland were to come with something really serious, I do believe Giannis would at least consider it. It wouldn’t be a situation where he would just say ‘Nah. Throw it in the trash,’” Haynes said on SiriusXM NBA Radio Thursday.
Antetokounmpo Already Familiar With Blazers’ Floor Generals
One of the biggest reasons why Giannis could move to Portland is that he knows plenty of players on the roster. In addition to Lillard, with whom he played from 2023 to 2025, he also went to battle with Jrue Holiday, who was part of Milwaukee’s championship team in 2021.
Both of those players would be key to unlocking Giannis’ fit with the Trail Blazers. Any team would love to have Antetokounmpo on its roster because he is one of the league’s top stars. In addition to a ring and Finals MVP trophy, he has two MVPs under his belt and a Defensive Player of the Year award.
When it comes to his accolades, it is hard to discount Giannis’ talent. If this potential Blazers trade happens, it shows the level of intent that general manager Joe Cronin and team owner Tom Dundon are showing. They want to win a championship, and this is the type of move they should be looking into.
Familiarity with some of the players can go a long way for the Trail Blazers. Considering they have other promising pieces like Donovan Clingan, Toumani Camara and All-Star Deni Avdija, Giannis could be convinced.
The Blazers Trade Package Might Be Too Much To Give
Trading for a superstar like Giannis will inevitably require a significant package. This usually means parting with a promising player or two, alongside a veteran’s huge contract to match Antetokounmpo’s salary. For the Blazers, those young players could be Scoot Henderson and Shaedon Sharpe, then the veteran to match the salary would be Jerami Grant.
Another big part of this potential Blazers trade is that Portland has the rights to Milwaukee’s 2029 first-round pick and two swaps in 2028 and ’30, all of which were included in the 2023 deal for Lillard. As a team that will be looking to rebuild, the Bucks would love to get those back.
This is from years ago, Giannis been flirting with the idea of coming to Portland for YEARS…

Now that it has been addressed, the main question surrounding the Blazers is whether they might give away too much. Portland has been building something promising with its young players, but sending them away is a choice the franchise could regret.
They have not seen the full potential of these youngsters, while Giannis is in his 30s. His injury history over the last few years also raises concerns. However, many people would argue that the Blazers have rarely taken swings at big-time players, and this might be the golden opportunity to compete for a championship.
Giannis’ Fit With the Blazers Is Not a Seamless One
Antetokounmpo is already a well-known commodity as one of the league’s superstars. With that being said, it would be intriguing he ends up getting traded to Portland.
Giannis’ fit alongside Holiday is unquestionable, as they won a championship together. His two-season stint with Lillard eventually led to promising chemistry. However, his fit with the rest of the team may be a wild card.
Clingan’s improved 3-point shooting and consistency could pan out well next to Giannis in the frontcourt. Meanwhile, Avdija and Antetokounmpo may have some overlapping skill sets. They are both physical players who thrive in the paint, which could limit the Blazers’ offense. Portland already had shooting problems throughout this season, and adding Giannis to that further strengthens the claim that the Blazers need knockdown players.
Regardless, the developments around Giannis and Portland will be exciting to follow, especially since the Bucks star could truly elevate the Blazers’ future.
