Detroit Pistons Waiting to Find Out First Round Opponent

With the NBA Play-In Tournament starting Tuesday, the Detroit Pistons are waiting to find out who they’ll face in the first round of the NBA playoffs. As it stands right now, the Miami Heat, Charlotte Hornets, Philadelphia 76ers, and Orlando Magic are all potential eighth seeds in the Eastern Conference. And out of those four options, there is definitely one the Pistons want to face and one they want to avoid. That being said, it’s hard not to see Detroit making the second round given how strong they finished the season.

Detroit Pistons Waiting to Find Out First Round Opponent

The 2025-26 regular season has come to an end. Saying it was good to the Pistons might be the understatement of the year. Detroit finished first in the Eastern Conference with a four-game lead over the second-place Boston Celtics. On top of that, they were the third-best team in the league after the San Antonio Spurs and the Oklahoma City Thunder.

But it wasn’t without its scares. With only a few weeks left in the season, Cade Cunningham suffered a collapsed lung against the Washington Wizards. While it could have been a disaster, the rest of the team stepped up and kept winning. Both Jalen Duren and Daniss Jenkins were huge parts of that. By the time Cunningham returned three weeks later, the Pistons had only lost three games in his absence. It was the definition of a best case scenario.

Now, Detroit is getting ready for the playoffs. Like the number one seed in the West, the Pistons also have to wait for their first-round opponent. Number one seeds take on number eight seeds that have to fight their way through the Play-In Tournament to get there. Detroit won’t know who their opponent is until April 17.

The East Play-In Has Plenty of Hidden Dangers

There are two matches in the Eastern Conference play-in that the Pistons must pay attention to. First is the matchup between the Miami Heat and the Charlotte Hornets. An annual play-in team, the Heat have been here before. For the ultra-young Hornets team, this is a new experience. That doesn’t mean they aren’t dangerous. In fact, the Hornets are one of the hottest teams in the league and are capable beating anyone, particularly in a one-and-done game like this.

After that, there’s the faceoff between the Philadelphia 76ers and the Orlando Magic. The winner of that game takes the seventh seed and will face the Celtics in the first round of the playoffs. The loser will take on the winner of the Heat-Hornets game, with the team that comes out on top facing the Pistons.

By the time it’s all said and done, Detroit will know who their first round opponent is. The current odds have the Sixers beating the Magic and moving on to play the Celtics. That will leave the Magic to take on either the Heat or the Hornets, with Charlotte being favored over Miami. After that, the odds are on the Hornets to win and face Detroit; however, anything is possible. The Heat could surprise everyone and run from the play-in to the Finals — again.

Good Options and Bad Options for the Pistons

The team Detroit would most likely want to face in the first round is the Sixers. They faced Philly four times this season and won all of those games. Plus, the Sixers are rather beat up, which is par for the course. Joel Embiid is recovering from an emergency appendectomy and Tyrese Maxey is playing through a brutal finger injury.

Oddly enough, the team the Pistons would want to avoid the most is the Magic. They split the season series two games apiece, meaning Orlando might stand a chance against them. That being said, the Magic are also dealing with injuries to key players like Franz Wagner, Anthony Black, and Jett Howard. Those issues are partially why the Hornets have a statistical edge over Orlando if they end up meeting in the play-in.

If the odds hold out and the Hornets meet the Pistons in the playoffs, it’s a good scenario for Detroit. The Hornets are a young, energetic team with some serious offense. But the Pistons defeated them in both of their meetings this season. Still, the Pistons shouldn’t take any team lightly. The NBA playoffs are a much different scene, and it’s hard to say who will rise to the challenge.
