3. Detroit Mercy Titans (15-14, 12-8)
Detroit Mercy gets the Horizon’s No. 3 seed as the Titans split their two games with Wright State. Meanwhile, Green Bay and Oakland both lost to the Raiders.
Detroit’s 15 wins are the program’s most since 2015-16 — the Titans won a combined nine games over the previous two campaigns. Also, their 12 Horizon League victories set a school record. Moreover, the Titans are playing good basketball and are 7-2 in their last nine.
The Titans were a middle-of-the-pack team in the conference on both ends of the floor, with just a +0.8 scoring margin. The Titans led the league in three-point percentage (40.1%) and were second in free throw percentage (79%) despite not shooting many shots in either category. Orlando Lovejoy leads a guard-oriented Titan squad with 15.4 points a game.
The Titans defend well, holding opponents to 44.5% from the field (second in the Horizon) and 33.2% from 3-point range (first). They are also a solid rebounding team with a +3.0 rebound margin.
Strengths: Physical defensive team that does an outstanding job pressuring the ball.
Weaknesses: Inconsistent shooting and turnover-prone.
