LeBron James is set for a role change as Luka Doncic wants him to retire a laker

LeBron James Embraces New Lakers Role As Luka Doncic Pushes Continuity

LOS ANGELES — All summer, whispers followed LeBron James. But the reality was steady: he never asked for a trade, never requested a buyout. The Lakers stayed firm too. James, even at 40, remains elite. He made another All-NBA team and stood out in a playoff loss to Minnesota. Rob Pelinka had no interest in dismantling the roster. With Luka Doncic in purple and gold, the Lakers see continuity(and flexibility) as the path forward. Trading James, Pelinka believes, would only set the team back.

Doncic’s arrival reshaped the franchise. League sources said he and James spoke often over the summer, strategizing how to maximize their partnership. Doncic himself made the case clear.

“Of course. I mean, he’s one of the best basketball players ever,” Doncic told Sports Central LA. “Having him there helps all of us — not just me, every player, every staff member. He knows how to win.”

Doncic’s insistence underscores how much he values LeBron James’ role. He doesn’t just want James on the roster. He wants James integrated into the team’s identity as the Lakers chase another title.

Building Together

Anthony Irwin of ClutchPoints reported the two stars have maintained regular communication since June. On August 2, James even FaceTimed Doncic to congratulate him on his contract extension. The message was simple: they’re aligned.

The numbers back it up. Last season, the Lakers went 15–8 in 23 games featuring both stars. Doncic averaged 27.7 points, 7.6 rebounds, and 7.3 assists next to James. James averaged 23.7 points, 7.8 rebounds, and 6.7 assists alongside Doncic.

For Doncic, who grew up watching James, the partnership still feels surreal. A source told DallasHoopsJournal he wants James to retire as a Laker.

Shifting Responsibilities

James accepted his $52.6 million player option for 2025–26, the final year of his contract. He becomes an unrestricted free agent next summer. But he is already adapting.

According to Irwin, James has worked this offseason on becoming more effective off the ball. He has focused on catch-and-shoot threes and conserving energy for defense, knowing Doncic will drive the offense.

It’s another wrinkle in LeBron James role on the Lakers— less ball dominance, more versatility. That shift could extend his career while keeping the Lakers in the hunt.

Continuity, Not Change

The Lakers preserved flexibility to add another star. They also have Bronny James in uniform, another storyline tied to legacy and family. Yet the core of the plan remains simple: keep James, trust Doncic, and build around them.

The most logical outcome is the one both sides already see. James boosts the Lakers’ chances. The Lakers give James the stage he still deserves.
