Although a cause of death has not been disclosed, Kevin revealed that Stan battled severe health issues for a long time, which intensified in recent months. Despite these struggles, Kevin admitted he never truly believed he would lose his father so soon.
Stan’s Rise Through Sports
Born in Los Angeles in 1949 to Milton and Emily “Glee” Wilson, Stan grew up in a house filled with music and athletic ambition. While Mike channeled his energy into music, Stan’s towering 6-foot-9 frame guided him toward basketball.
Stan earned a scholarship to the University of Oregon, where he quickly became a campus legend. He sported a classic handlebar mustache and played with an attitude that fit the 1970s era perfectly. During his college career, he shattered scoring records and became the only Duck to average over 20 points per game in two separate seasons.
Before the introduction of the three-point line, Stan left Oregon as the school’s all-time leading scorer. Stan Love’s achievements laid the groundwork for a future where Kevin Love would also forge a basketball legacy.
Stan Love’s NBA Journey
In 1971, the Baltimore Bullets selected Stan with the ninth overall pick in the NBA Draft. His professional career spanned four seasons with the Bullets, Los Angeles Lakers, and San Antonio Spurs.
After a short stint playing professionally in France, Stan retired from basketball. However, life kept moving, and the thought that Stan Love will die one day still felt distant to those who knew him.
After retiring, he toured the world with the Beach Boys, at times acting as a bodyguard to cousin Brian Wilson during Wilson’s battle with addiction.

Stan Love eventually settled in Lake Oswego with his wife Karen, where they raised Kevin Love. Kevin would later become a five-star recruit and one of the top prep basketball players in Oregon history.
However, not all memories tied to Oregon were positive. Kevin’s decision to play at UCLA rather than Oregon angered Ducks fans. During visits back to Eugene, Kevin and the Love family faced cruel chants, personal attacks, and even death threats. This hostility strained Stan’s relationship with his beloved alma mater.
Despite the past, Kevin paid tribute earlier this year by wearing Stan’s varsity jacket while walking into the Moda Center before a Miami Heat game. It was a public sign of forgiveness, resilience, and pride — one that connected father and son beyond the court.
