LeBron James grew up idolizing Michael Jordan. Now, as he nears the end of his career, their relationship remains distant. James recently spoke about his connection with Jordan during an interview on The Pat McAfee Show. He admitted they don’t talk much but hopes that could change after retirement.
LeBron James Opens Up About His Relationship With Michael Jordan
The Competitive Barrier Between James and Jordan
James made it clear that competition plays a role in their lack of communication. “We don’t talk,” James said. “Because I’m still playing. I’m still focused on my craft right now.” Jordan, known for his ruthless competitive nature, might see James as a current rival. Until James retires, their relationship might stay the same.
James believes Jordan still sees him as a competitor rather than a peer. “Even if you don’t know him personally, [you know] he is one of the most ruthless competitors there is,” James said. “Until I’m done and he doesn’t have to look at me running up and down wearing No. 23… [a relationship will have to wait].”
Learning From Kobe Bryant’s Post-Retirement Bond
James referenced Kobe Bryant when discussing the possibility of a post-career friendship with Jordan. He and Bryant were fierce competitors for years. Their relationship remained distant until Bryant retired in 2016.
“The funny thing is, me and Kobe… we never had a real relationship either,” James said. “We were on the Olympic team together in ’08 and ’12, but it was always competitive between us.”
That changed once Bryant stepped away from the game. “When he retired, that’s when our relationship became really, really good,” James recalled. “He welcomed me to L.A. He called me like, ‘Bro, anything you need, I got you. You’re a Laker now. You’re family.'”
James hopes a similar evolution can happen with Jordan. Once he’s no longer chasing championships and historical milestones, their relationship may develop naturally.
Respect and Influence
Despite the distance, James deeply respects Jordan. He has always acknowledged Jordan’s impact on his career. “I wear 23 because of MJ,” James said. “The inspiration that he gave me as a kid in Akron, Ohio, who [didn’t] have much inspiration in [his] hometown.”
One of their most notable interactions came during the 2022 NBA All-Star Game. The league honored its 75th Anniversary Team, bringing past and present legends together. Jordan and James shared a warm embrace, a rare public moment between the two icons.
“That was dope,” James said. “That’s straight respect, admiration.” Moments like that show the foundation for a future friendship exists.
What the Future Holds For LeBron James and Michael Jordan
James continues to build his legacy while Jordan remains an iconic figure in basketball history. Until James retires, their relationship may not change much.
However, once James steps away from the game, things could be different. If his experience with Bryant is any indication, a stronger bond with Jordan could be on the horizon. Only time will tell if two of the greatest players ever will develop the friendship many fans have long envisioned.
