Lakers, Mavericks Pull Off Star-Studded Blockbuster Trade
Why Would the Teams Do This?
Though an explanation behind the deal will soon emerge, the one question fans are surely asking is, “Why now?”
The Lakers moved in silence to acquire help around LeBron James, with many wondering what their plans would be in a post-LeBron era. Well, now fans have their answer.
LA receives a 25-year-old superstar who will undoubtedly make an impact upon his return from a calf injury. He checks all the boxes for the Lakers as a superstar second option next to James. They also acquire a decent big man in Maxi Kleber and reunite with Markieff Morris, who played for the Lakers from 2019 to 2021 and played in the team’s title-winning rotation in 2020. In bittersweet fashion, this trade also breaks up an elite one-two punch that brought the Lakers their 17th title and made the playoffs in four of their five seasons together.
Dallas makes an equally inexplicable move by trading away a franchise cornerstone who many thought would retire a Maverick. They pair Kyrie Irving and Klay Thompson with an elite big man in Davis, who joins a conference rival currently climbing out of Play-in territory. The Mavericks also receive a young standout in Max Christie, who was just getting into his groove as a starter for the purple and gold.
Utah is in as a necessary third team that acquires a reserve point guard in Jalen Hood-Schifino and extra draft capital.
The Mavericks approached the Lakers recently and offered Luka Doncic, sources tell ESPN. Lakers brass met and believed the 25-year-old Doncic has the ability to be the face of their franchise for the next decade while giving Anthony Davis a win-now move in Dallas.

MacMahon: Mavs had concerns moving forward with Doncic due to conditioning issues, looming commitment of supermax extension.

Wrapping my head around this with everyone else but the biggest thing to know is the Lakers have been led by generational superstars throughout their history and this was an opportunity too good for them to pass up after the Mavericks called. Also worth noting Mavs GM Nico… https://t.co/2thIofJBst

While fan reaction is running rampant across social media, all sides will answer burning questions soon. For now, one thing is certain: the Lakers and Mavericks have shaken the landscape of the league for the rest of this season and beyond.
