In a recent interview, former NBA player and current G League guard Lance Stephenson expressed his desire to return to the league:

My mentality coming into the G League was to actually help the young guys get better. Show them all the things I learned as being a vet. Trying to show them the ropes, telling them what it’s like, showing them how to play defense, showing them how to get to the hole, learning the game as quickly as possible. But, my goal is to get back up there with NBA teams. I’m actually going hard, trying to win games, and just trying to have fun out there.

This season, Stephenson is playing in the G League for the Iowa Wolves. In 18 games, Stephenson is averaging 14.5 points, 7.8 rebounds, and 5.1 assists per game.

In parts of 10 seasons, Stephenson played for numerous teams–most notably with the Indiana Pacers during three separate stints. As of now, Stephenson averaged 8.6 points, 4.1 rebounds, and 2.9 assists per game in his NBA career.

The 33-year-old last played in the NBA while with the Pacers in 2022.

NBA Rumors: Former Guard Interested in NBA Return

Could Lance Stephenson Actually Return to the NBA?

Stephenson is putting up solid numbers in the G League. However, he is not the same guy from 10 years ago. Stephenson has not played a consistent role for an NBA team since he was on the Pacers during the 2017-18 season. The Brooklyn native never fully found his shot, and his athleticism has naturally taken a hit over the years. However, Stephenson has been around the game for many years and can still play at a high level. Stephenson himself believes he still has a lot to offer NBA teams:

If you could talk to NBA teams right now, what would you tell them about what you could bring to their NBA team? Lance Stephenson: Leadership. Definitely, helping young guys. Winning mentality, just that edge on the defensive end. A lot of teams need help with defense, especially during the playoffs. Tough guys that can play defense and lock down and win games. I can bring any edge that a coach needs.

As for which teams could make Stephenson’s dream of an NBA return a reality, the guard brought up two teams he would be interested in playing for seven months ago:

“I think it is time for a New York team. I want to play for the [Brooklyn] Nets or the Knicks either one would do,“ he said.

It should be noted this was said before Stephenson signed a deal to play for the Timberwolves G League affiliate. Stephenson played six games for Minnesota in 2017. A return to the Timberwolves’ main roster could make sense if the team is looking for an additional veteran presence.

The Last Word on Lance Stephenson

All in all, an NBA return is not completely out of the picture for the G Leaguer. It will be interesting to see if Stephenson finds a spot on an NBA roster by the end of the season.
