Why Cavan Biggio Deserves More Recognition

Toronto Blue Jays utility player Cavan Biggio has worked his way to victory and has shown MLB that he is worthy of more recognition. This has been illustrated through both his defense and offense. One of the many star qualities that Biggio possesses is that he is a multifaceted player. While he mostly plays second base, Biggio can also play in the outfield in right field and third base. Biggio deserves more credit for the work he has put in defensively this season. In addition, he has improved with his approach at the plate. He has been driving in more runs and has been getting more walks.

Why Cavan Biggio Is Worthy of More Recognition

Clutch Cavan

When it comes to the Blue Jays, we never know who will be the one to step it up at the plate. This is due to the fact that they have many strong contributors offensively. Although there have been inconsistencies with certain players and their offense, the great thing is that when we least expect it players come through in big ways. Biggio has been one of these types of players but has without question been more consistent.

This has especially been apparent in the second half of the season. This is also because he has earned himself more playing time. He’s had many fine moments this season and in the game against the Oakland Athletics on Monday, September 4th, his offense deserved a lot of recognition. Biggio came up with two key hits in the game, one in the top of the fifth inning and the second in the top of the 10th inning.

His clutch baseball skills don’t end there. Back on August 7th, against the Cleveland Guardians Biggio had a spectacular game where his nifty tenacity shined through. He got a big homer late in the game to put the Jays on the scoreboard. But it wasn’t only his offense that deserved recognition in the game. Biggio made an unbelievable unassisted double-play that really helped seal a 3-1 victory over the Guardians. He was without question the star player in that game.

Discipline for the Win

To say that Biggio has been more disciplined at the plate is highly accurate and justifiable. This was highlighted when the Blue Jays beat the Philadelphia Phillies back on August 15th. Biggio was hit on the foot with the bases loaded in the eighth inning. While you may be thinking he didn’t do much, his discipline and sacrifice with getting hit by the pitch helped the Jays win. At the end of the day, he was able to get on base and that amounted to sweet success with a 2-1 victory over the Phillies.

In his last five games, Biggio has recorded four hits, four runs, a double, two RBI, three walks, and a stolen base. These numbers definitely earn him some recognition and brownie points. Biggio has been playing with more confidence and has come up with some beautiful clean base hits for Toronto and more importantly when needed the most.

Lefty Can Be Hefty

His bat is also significant in the lineup as he bats left. We know lefty hitters have an advantage because they are prone to face more right-handed pitchers. There are definitely more right-handed pitchers in MLB than lefties, so having Biggio’s left-handed bat in the lineup is reassuring for many reasons. Over the past five seasons he has spent with the Blue Jays, the most home runs he hit was 16 back in 2019.

On average, he ranges to hit about nine home runs a season. Biggio may not be the strongest home run hitter, but he definitely has some pop to his bat. Once again, he is one of those players that will surprise you. You never know when Biggio will come in and spark up a ball deep into the seats. Biggio has also showcased potential with RISP, and improved swing decisions. Let’s not forget he can also be recognized for his speed.

Biggio Defies Odds

Overall, the Jays are lucky to have Biggio and have utilized his role in key situations. In the end, it’s been positive for the Blue Jays. He is a player that they have been turning to coming off the bench but has played a more dominant role in terms of playing time this season. He is without question underrated and deserves more credit and recognition for the work he has put in for the Jays this season. It will be pivotal to see what Biggio will be able to do for the remainder of the regular season for the Jays. Every game matters at this point in the season. If Biggio can continue to be productive for the Jays, it will be instrumental in many ways. Biggio represents both versatility and value for the Jays and deserves more recognition than he is given.
