SF Giants Dismiss President of Baseball Operations Farhan Zaidi

The San Francisco Giants have fired president of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi and replaced him with franchise icon Buster Posey.

Zaidi’s tenure in the Bay Area was marred by underachievement. The Giants had a franchise-best 107 wins in 2021, earning Zaidi an Executive of the Year Award. Despite only one postseason appearance, the club extended Zaidi’s contract for three years in October 2023.

His stint as president of baseball ops was highlighted by the signings of Blake Snell, Jung Hoo Lee, Jorge Soler, Jordan Hicks, and Matt Chapman during the 2023 offseason. However, Snell was only signed for one year, while Soler departed at the trade deadline to rejoin the Atlanta Braves. Chapman, though, signed a six-year, $151 million contract extension on September 4. Posey reportedly spearheaded talks with the four-time Gold Glove Award winner, per The Athletic.

Before being hired by the Giants, Zaidi worked for the Oakland Athletics and Los Angeles Dodgers organizations, where he served as an assistant general manager and general manager, respectively. The 47-year-old concludes his time in the Bay Area with an overall club record of 453-417 (.521 winning percentage).

Meanwhile, Posey, a three-time World Series-winning catcher with the Giants in 2010, 2012, and 2014, retired following the 2021 season. He joined the club’s 30-member ownership group and has served on its board of directors since September 2022. The 37-year-old will now assume a much more critical role for the only organization he’s ever known.

During his impressive 12-year career, Posey, who was named the 2012 NL MVP, earned seven All-Star selections, was honored as the 2010 NL Rookie of the Year, received five Silver Slugger Awards, won a Gold Glove, and clinched a batting title. His appointment signifies the beginning of a new chapter for the Giants.
