Struggling Dodgers Starter Optioned to Triple-A

Struggling starter Bobby Miller no longer has a locker in the Los Angeles Dodgers’ clubhouse, according to Jack Harris of the Los Angeles Times. The right-hander gave up four earned runs in just two innings last night against the light-hitting Miami Marlins. Manager Dave Roberts said that Bobby Miller has been optioned to Triple-A Oklahoma City.

Waste Not, Want Not

The Dodgers, who are short of arms in the starting rotation, gave Miller ample opportunities to round into form this season. They have also given him numerous chances to secure a postseason roster spot. Yet, every succeeding start has been worse than the previous one. The right-hander shows a penchant for giving up hard contact and the home run ball.

Troublesome Stats

This lack of command is illustrated in Miller’s ERA of 8.52. It is the highest ERA of 1,156 pitchers who have thrown at least 56 innings for the Dodgers. To make matters worse, the number of walks is also high at 30.

What Happened?

According to those around the game, the young hurler has all the tools to be successful, and last year seemed to bear it out. In 2023, Miller had an ERA of 3.76 and seemed to show the promise of a future ace. However, he went on the injured list in July with a shoulder problem, and it appears that he is battling a knee issue as well.

Open Roster Spots

Reliever Joe Kelly has been activated off the IL and will take Miller’s roster spot. Kelly has been dealing with a shoulder issue off and on this year. The Dodgers are hoping that the hard throwing reliever will be able to control his nasty repertoire just in time for the postseason.

Michael Grove was also optioned in favor of recently signed Zach Logue.

Miller’s Future

As for Miller, the right-hander may still have a bright future with the Dodgers, but starting in 2025. Right now, it is abundantly clear that he can’t be trusted on a postseason mound, even if the Dodgers are desperate for arms.
