Former Mets 1st Round Pick Finally Paying Off

In 2017, the New York Mets had the 20th pick in the draft- and used it to draft David Peterson. Suddenly, in 2024, Peterson broke into a star for New York, and the Mets could not appreciate it more.

Meet David Peterson, The Met’s Newest Ace

In 2024, Peterson broke out after returning from IL in June from hip surgery. In 15 starts, Peterson has struck out 66 and walked 37, not the numbers or an ace, but he has pitched to a 2.85 ERA and is 8-1. Peterson seems to pitch on suitable days, as New York has scored more points on the days that Peterson pitches. However, it is also a fact that Peterson has pitched incredibly well for New York.

The Mets have a 12-3 record when Peterson pitches, showing that Peterson’s effect on New York this season has been significant. Regardless of just 66 k’s in 15 starts and only 15 starts, Peterson continues to get groundball out and even k’s when he needs it. Peterson’s highlights this season include striking out the side when the Yankees loaded the bases in the first game of the Subway series and other excellent highlights for Peterson. Peterson’s sparkling ERA and record shows why he could be considered the newest ace of New York’s pitching staff.

Peterson Is Finally Healthy

The most significant factor in Peterson’s new form may be the fact he is finally healthy. Peterson’s hip has bothered him for years and made him less effective. In 2021, Peterson had numbers identical to this season. 15 starts, 69 K’s, and 29 BBs, but a 5.54 ERA and a 2-6 record. Compared to this season’s 2.85 ERA and 8-1 record, it is easy to see that Peterson has done much better at getting the job done.

Peterson’s velocity and control alone should make him very vulnerable to the opponent’s bats. However, Peterson continues to show why he might be the next ace to join New York.

The Met’s Rotation Future Is Bright

The Mets rotation looks bright with Kodai Senga Stats, David Peterson, Brandon Sproat, and Christian Scott. They have the ability to sign free agents, including Sean Manea and Luis Severino. Peterson’s ability to win games for New York makes him very valuable, and the rotation having strikeout guys and guys like David Peterson is useful. New York has the ability to mold together a great rotation.

Overall, the Mets thought in 2017 that Peterson was the right choice. The Mets thought Peterson was able to be a future star for New York. At first, Peterson did not pan out, and the Mets even considered cutting him. He never even played an entire season for New York and continued to struggle. But now, Peterson has broken out into an ace. He has also lessened the pain caused by Kodai Senga’s injury. New York’s newest star can also play for New York. And now, the Mets 1st round pick is finally panning out.
