Five Mets Players to Watch for the Rest of the 2024 Season

The New York Mets have seen certain players have a significant impact on their season in 2024. However, the 2024 season for New York is not even close to being over yet. Certain players must have an impact the rest of the way for the Mets to find success beyond the regular season. Here are five in particular to watch whose performance will be key to the Mets’ success.

Five Mets to Watch for the Rest of the 2024 Season

Luis Severino

At one point this season, Luis Severino was described as the Mets’ “only ace.” However, since facing the Miami Marlins on June 13th, his ERA has gone from 3.12 to 4.17. He did paint a masterpiece on Saturday, tossing a complete game shutout against the Marlins. Aside from that, though, he has been abysmal in the last few months for New York, and the Mets need a better performance out of him. In order for Severino to have a chance at a big contract after 2024, he needs to put up better numbers overall.

The Mets’ interest in Severino might also decline if he backslides again. With top prospect Brandon Sproat and another young star in Christian Scott both in the making, the Mets may not need him in the rotation in the future.

Sean Manaea

Sean Manaea is on pace to have the best year of his career after signing with them in the offseason. He has led the Mets pitching staff in ERA, strikeouts, and wins. Although his numbers this season have not been those of an All-Star, he has pitched to a respectable 3.46 ERA. Unlike Severino, Manaea’s numbers have only improved since a bad month in June.

The Mets’ need for a consistent starter this season has been one of the main reasons why they’ve struggled to retain a playoff position, but Manaea is doing his part to address that need recently.

Mark Vientos

In 75 games this season, Mark Vientos has hit 19 home runs and has a solid .279 average. He has also driven in 49 runs. Vientos is currently on pace for a 25-home run season. However, given the number of games he’s missed, technically, Vientos is on pace for a 30-bomb season. Such a thing is not at all impossible for him, who continues to hit for power and shock MLB. If Mark Vientos gets hot and ends up with a 30-homer season, the impact on the Mets would be great.

Brandon Nimmo

Now in the second year of an eight-year deal, Brandon Nimmo was riding high heading into the All-Star break. However, since then, he has completely deflated. Since the break, Nimmo has hit just one home run. However, this one home run came very recently as a part of a breakout night against the Miami Marlins. If the Mets could get Nimmo going again, they may break out and end 2024 on a good note.

Pete Alonso

The Mets need Pete Alonso, their best player since his debut in 2019, to perform at a high level. Alonso has hit four home runs so far in August and needs to break out for more before the end of the season. Alonso is still one of the best home run hitters in the game and needs to show that. Such a push from Alonso could lead to a postseason spot.

Alonso can carry this team, and his impact could be huge if his slugging picks up. If any or all of these players to watch finish the season strong, the Mets could be primed for a run in October.
