Hard-Throwing Dodgers Reliever Already Looking Like Closer

Since the Los Angeles Dodgers acquired reliever Michael Kopech, he’s looked like a different pitcher. The 28-year-old is thriving in his new environment. Through his first eight appearances and 27 batters faced with the Dodgers, he recorded 8 1/3 scoreless innings, a save, a walk, and 13 strikeouts. He’s pitched well enough to earn the closer role. His transformation from struggling pitcher to probable closer has been exciting to watch. With his triple-digit fastball, the case is already being made for him to close games.

Dodgers Reliever Michael Kopech Looking Like Closer

New Environment Molds Kopech

The Boston Red Sox chose Kopech in the first round of the 2014 MLB draft. He then made his MLB debut with the Chicago White Sox in 2018. With the White Sox this season, he had a 2-8 record and a 4.74 ERA. He’s settled in well with the Dodgers, earning a save on Friday in the Dodgers’ 7-6 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals. It is a surprise that Dave Roberts, manager of the Dodgers, hasn’t officially made him the closer. Kopech has demonstrated filthy stuff.

Meanwhile, many relievers in the Dodgers pen haven’t shown the same success. They have, in fact, blown games. Kopech is a desirable asset for the Dodgers because he’s a high-leverage pitcher. He performs well under pressure, which isn’t a skill that all pitchers possess. Kopech is making $3 million this year and is arbitration-eligible in the offseason. The Dodgers have team control of him until 2025. Getting him at the trade deadline was a steal for them. Kopech picked up another save on Sunday for the Dodgers 2-1 victory over St. Louis. Opponents are 1-for-29 (.034) against him since he donned a Dodger uniform. His velocity was a bit lower on Sunday than his usual heat, but with some rest, this should help boost the confidence he’s been riding.

An Unreal Fastball

Kopech will become a free agent after the 2025 season. By then, many teams will undoubtedly have their eye on the 28-year-old. In the August 16th game, he threw a fastball with unbelievable movement. Cardinals center fielder Victor Scott II fouled off the two-seamer. These pitching statistics summarize the heater: 102.6 mph, 18 inches of IVB (induced vertical break), 2811 RPM (revolutions per minute), and 10 inches of arm side run. Arm side run focuses on the spin movement of the fastball.

Along with Kopech, former Blue Jay Kevin Kiermaier has also adjusted well as a Dodger. He went yard in Friday’s victory, getting a three-run home run and recording four RBI. If Kopech can remain healthy, he will be a lethal weapon for the Dodgers in the postseason. However, it’s vital that they use him properly and don’t burn out his arm. Kopech was successful in closing out two games led by only one run. With his dominance, he continues to look like the real deal as the de facto closer. Kopech has been untouchable, and this trade will be recognized as one of the best this season if he continues to stump opposing hitters.
