Red Sox “Big Three” Prospects Move To Triple-A

The Boston Red Sox’s farm system has some heavy talent that consistently plays together. That will continue for the foreseeable future in 2024. Boston’s top prospects coined the “Big Three,” are all moving up the organization’s ranks on Sunday. Marcelo Mayer, Roman Anthony, and Kyle Teel are transitioning from Double-A (Portland Sea Dogs) to Triple-A (Worcester Red Sox), according to the Boston Globe’s Alex Speier. The group are all ranked inside MLB.com’s top-25 prospects. None have ever reached the AAA level.

Red Sox “Big Three” Prospects Move To Triple-A

It’s been a dominant season for the three, who have shot up prospect rankings this season. In 2024, Portland’s squad was ranked the third-best minor league team in baseball. Much of that can be credited to Mayer, Anthony, and Teel, who have all strongly developed. Four of Boston’s top-five prospects began the year with the Sea Dogs. Right-handed pitcher Wikelman Gonzalez (No. 5) is the only one left.

Marcelo Mayer – SS – MLB’s #6 Prospect

Mayer headlines the group being called up to Triple-A. The 21-year-old has mostly cruised through his minor league career thus far. Mayer was selected with the fourth pick in the 2021 MLB draft out of high school. He reached Double-A for the first time in 2023. After struggling last season, Mayer exploded in 2024. He batted .307 with a .850 OPS and 28 doubles with the Sea Dogs this year. He recently came off the injured list but missed less than two weeks. Mayer was a part of the All-Star Futures Game, where he represented the American League.

Mayer currently ranks as the sixth-best prospect in baseball. One of the players ahead of him, Jackson Holliday (Baltimore Orioles), is already in MLB. Three of the top six come from the AL East, with Holliday in front and Junior Caminero (Tampa Bay Rays) sitting second. Mayer is the third-highest infielder on the list. It’s the highest he’s ever been ranked by MLB.

Roman Anthony – OF – MLB’s #13 Prospect

Anthony is the Red Sox’s second-ranked prospect and was the 79th pick in the 2022 MLB draft. He began 2024 slowly, batting just .219 on May 10. It’s been a different story since for the 20-year-old. Anthony was up to .267 by mid-June and batted .284 in July. He’s been on fire over his last ten matchups, collecting 18 hits, 11 RBI, and four home runs. Anthony slashed .269/.367/.489 in Double-A this year with 15 homers.

Anthony is the No. 13 prospect in baseball as of Sunday, the highest mark of his career. Just three outfielders sit above him: Dylan Crews (Washington Nationals), Walker Jenkins (Minnesota Twins), and Max Clark (Detroit Tigers). Anthony helps Boston be one of five MLB clubs with multiple players inside the top 15. He smacked a game-winning home run in his final at-bat with Portland.

Kyle Teel – C – MLB’s #23 Prospect

Teel rounds out the Red Sox prospects heading to Worcester. He is the only one who attended college, spending three years at the University of Virginia. Teel was selected with the 14th pick of the 2023 MLB draft and immediately performed in the minors. He played across three levels last season, batting .363 in 26 contests. He kept producing in 2024, appearing 84 times for the Sea Dogs. Teel batted .298 with 11 homers, 60 RBI, and 20 doubles this season. He’s off to a hot start in August, posting a 1.032 OPS in 30 at-bats.

Teel makes Boston just one of three clubs with three top-25 prospects. He’s ranked the fifth-best catcher on the list, trailing a group headlined by Ethan Salas (San Diego Padres). Teel has already moved up nearly 20 spots in 2024 after starting the year at #40. Triple-A will be his fourth level in just 110 total minor league games.
