The LA Dodgers have released utility player Cavan Biggio. Biggio was designated for assignment earlier this week. Biggio was DFA’d to make room for Freddie Freeman, who was on the family emergency list. He returned to the lineup on August 5th. 29-year-old Biggio has different options that he can explore with his release.

Biggio’s Future
With the Dodgers releasing him, he can be claimed off waivers. But the Dodgers can send him to the minors if no team claims him. But considering Biggio has more than five years of playing time in the Majors, he can reject this option without surrendering his salary. Unfortunately, Biggio struggled with his limited time with the Dodgers. He was slashing .192/.306/.329 with a .635 OPS. If another team does claim him off waivers, they will take over the remainder of his 2024 salary. This season, Biggio is making $4.21 million. While it is uncertain if any team will pick him up, Biggio is a veteran player with experience.
Last season for the Blue Jays, he contributed offensively and defensively despite not playing every day. His numbers were in no comparison to his 2019 numbers, where he hit 16 home runs. Overall, Biggio has lacked consistency, which will make it difficult for a contending team to consider claiming him. However, a team like the Chicago White Sox or the Miami Marlins could be two viable teams that would possibly consider claiming him. This could also be something that might be done in the offseason.
His future remains unknown, and seeing where he ventures off will be interesting. Could this be the end, or will he find a new home where he can find consistency? If he could find a role with the Chicago White Sox, he could certainly gain more playing time. When the Toronto Blue Jays got rid of Biggio, it certainly came as a shock to many. But his numbers were not at par this season with the Blue Jays. While it is unlikely that he will return to the minors, considering his lack of consistency, maybe this is an option he should consider to improve himself.
