Red Sox Activate Deadline Acquistion in Flurry Of Roster Moves

The dust has settled from the 2024 trade deadline, and MLB organizations are beginning to deal with their new rosters. One of the clubs that was active in the market was the Boston Red Sox, who made five trades near the July 30 deadline. On Wednesday, Boston made multiple transactions to clean up its current squad. The Red Sox activated an acquisition in a flurry of roster moves that included four players.

Red Sox Activate Lucas Sims Among Flurry Of Roster Moves

Recent Acquisition Added to MLB Roster

Lucas Sims was the Red Sox’s penultimate addition before 6:00 p.m. came around on Tuesday. He joined the Red Sox in a trade with the Cincinnati Reds that sent pitching prospect Ovis Portes to the NL Central club. Sims, in 43 appearances this season, has a 3.57 ERA and 40 strikeouts. Outside of a rough couple of outings in 2022, the reliever has consistently produced since 2020. Sims was expected to quickly join Boston’s roster following the acquisition, and that was made official on Wednesday. The 30-year-old right-hander will be an unrestricted free agent at the end of 2024. He joins a bullpen that includes Kenley Jansen, Brennan Bernardino, Zack Kelly, and newly acquired Luis García

Surging Minor Leaguer Gets First Chance At MLB Level

The second addition to the Red Sox roster is infielder Nick Sogard, who will make his MLB debut the first time he steps on the field. The 26-year-old was a 12th-round pick in 2019 by the Tampa Bay Rays. Sogard was traded to Boston in 2021 in a package that sent pitcher Jeffrey Springs to Tampa. He’s been in Triple-A with the Worcester Red Sox the last two campaigns, batting .266 and .279 respectively. In 2024, Sogard has a career-high .821 OPS. He had a strong June, batting .329 with six doubles, 15 RBI, and 12 walks. Sogard has never been ranked in the top 30 of the Red Sox system, according to MLB.com.

Struggling Infielder Returns To Minors For Second Time This Season

After spending a second stint in the major leagues, second baseman Jamie Westbrook is returning to Triple-A Worcester. He originally came up and made his MLB debut on June 2. Westbrook was optioned back to the minors just two weeks later, and then made the trip back to Boston on July 9. Between then and Wednesday, he batted just .091 with a home run in 22 at-bats. In total, Westbrook batted .150 with a .584 OPS in Boston. The 29-year-old has a .282 average and a strong .852 OPS in the minor leagues this year.

Reliever’s Quick Stint In Boston Ends With Disappointment

The Red Sox designated right-handed reliever Yohan Ramírez for assignment on Wednesday, rounding out the club’s moves. Ramírez was originally claimed off waivers from the Los Angeles Dodgers on July 28 and was activated two days later. He appeared once for Boston, allowing two earned runs (three total) and three hits in 1 ⅓ innings. The Red Sox were Ramírez’s fourth team of the season. He began with the New York Mets before being DFA’ed and claimed by the Baltimore Orioles. Baltimore designated him for assignment less than a month later and he returned to New York for a week. After leaving the Mets for the second time, Ramírez made his way to Los Angeles before his eventual departure. He has a 6.20 ERA in 38 appearances across the various organizations in 2024.
