Cardinals Right-Hander Lands on 15-Day IL With Knee Injury

Amid a resurgent season, St. Louis Cardinals right-hander Lance Lynn will go on the 15-day IL with right knee inflammation. Nursing a knee injury, Lynn looked good against the reigning World Series champion Texas Rangers last night, tossing five innings of one-run baseball. According to The Athletic’s Katie Woo, Lynn was walking with “a pretty noticeable limp” after his historic win on Tuesday. The veteran hurler is now the 23rd pitcher to earn a victory against all 30 MLB teams.

The 37-year-old Lynn has been a solid addition to the Cardinals rotation after reuniting with his former team in the offseason. A two-time All-Star, he has made 21 starts for St. Louis. He has a 4.06 ERA with 97 strikeouts over 106 ⅓ innings. MLB.com’s John Denton reported that Lynn knew his knee injury was “pretty serious” as he limped around the clubhouse. It’s still unclear if he had any imaging done. However, St. Louis is optimistic that Lynn can recover with rest and rehab. Lynn is just the latest injury blow to a Cardinals rotation that at one point only had four starters. The newly acquired righty Erick Fedde will assume Lynn’s spot in the starting rotation. Like Lynn, Fedde is having a resurgent season posting a 3.11 ERA in 21 starts with the Chicago White Sox.

Pitching prospect Michael McGreevy had his contract selected on Tuesday and made his MLB debut on Wednesday. Reliever Andre Pallante was expected to return to the bullpen, but with Lynn sidelined, manager Oliver Marmol could opt to keep him in the rotation.

In addition to placing Lynn on the 15-day injured list, the Cardinals made a flurry of roster moves on Wednesday. St. Louis optioned right-hander Chris Roycroft to Triple-A Memphis, swapping places with right-hander Ryan Loutos. To make room on the 40-man roster, right-hander Jacob Bosiokovic has been designated for assignment.
