Report: Padres Make Massive Trade To Acquire Closer From Marlins

In a massive move, the San Diego Padres reportedly acquired closer Tanner Scott from the Miami Marlins on Tuesday, according to ESPN’s Jeff Passan. When deadline day began, Scott was arguably the top relief pitcher left on the trading block. The left-handed pitcher will be an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season. The Padres are also acquiring reliever Bryan Hoeing in the deal. San Diego already began improving its bullpen on Sunday, trading for reliever Jason Adam from the Tampa Bay Rays.

Padres Make Massive Trade To Acquire Closer Tanner Scott

Scott has been nothing short of dominant during the 2024 season. He has a 1.18 ERA in 44 games, posting just a 1.01 WHIP. Scott has served as Miami’s primary closer and has 18 saves. He’s allowed just two runs since May 1 and has a 0.55 ERA in his last 30 appearances. Scott’s 3.2 WAR led all Marlins players by a wide margin. He has allowed more walks (27) than hits (19) and recorded 53 strikeouts with Miami this season.

Scott spent the first five years of his career with the Baltimore Orioles. He debuted in 2017 and pitched a total of 156 innings with the club, ending with a 4.73 ERA. The 30-year-old joined Miami before the 2022 season and had an overall 2.70 ERA with the organization. After struggling in his first campaign with the Marlins, he bounced back in 2023 with a 2.31 ERA in 78 innings. Scott’s 2024 season has been another step up from last year.

Bryan Hoeing was also sent to San Diego in the Scott deal. The 27-year-old has a 2.70 ERA in 30 innings this season. He failed to pitch consistently in his first two years with Miami, posting a 12.08 and 5.48 ERA, respectively. Hoeing has an impressive ERA+ of 163 in 2024. Hoeing will be arbitration-eligible for the foreseeable future.

Marlins Get Huge Return In Tanner Scott Trade

Miami compensated for Scott’s loss with a strong return. San Diego was not afraid to hold on to its farm system, dealing three of its top-five prospects. Left-handed pitcher Robby Snelling, the Padres No. 2 prospect according to MLB.com, headlines the deal. The 20-year-old was the 29th pick in 2022 and had a 1.82 ERA in 2023. He’s struggled in 2024, though, posting a high 6.01 ERA in Double-A.

Right-handed pitcher Adam Mazur, San Diego’s 4th-best prospect, was a second-round pick in 2022. He pitched well in the minors before making his MLB debut in 2024. Across 33 ⅔ innings, things haven’t gone well for Mazur. He had a 7.49 ERA in eight starts with the Padres this season. Padres No. 5 prospect, utilityman Graham Pauley, was also included in the deal. Despite being a 13th-round pick in 2022, Pauley made the major leagues this season and had a .125 average in 32 at-bats. Infielder Jay Beshears, San Diego’s No. 24 prospect, rounds out Miami’s haul. Beshears had a .261 average in 85 games this season at High-A.

The Marlins have already made multiple moves over the last few days, including the departure of A.J. Puk (Arizona Diamondbacks), Jazz Chisholm Jr. (New York Yankees), and Trevor Rogers (Baltimore Orioles). Miami is currently last in the National League East with a 39-67 record.
