Mets Connected To Three More Relief Pitchers

Per Andy Martino of SNY, the New York Mets are expected to trade for at least one pitcher before tonight’s 6 p.m. deadline. In recent hours, the organization has been connected to three new relievers.; just,

According to The Athletic, the Mets have discussed Chicago White Sox right-hander John Brebbia while Joel Sherman of the New York Post connects the team to lefties Tanner Banks of the White Sox and Tanner Scott of the Marlins.

Mets Connected To Three More Relievers

John Brebbia

New York’s pitching staff has allowed too many walks and has not struck enough batters out this year. Pitching coach Jeremy Hefner has been transparent about the unit’s struggles in these categories.

Well, adding Brebbia would help in both areas. The 34-year-old possesses a great 30 percent strikeout rate and a solid 6.6 percent walk rate. He has also excelled at getting opponents to chase pitches out of the zone.

Brebbia’ 5.71 ERA might scare teams off. However, metrics indicate that a bad White Sox defense might have inflated his ERA. When discussing a trade, modern front offices, like the Mets have with David Stearns, will value pitcher peripherals like strikeout and walk rates. Brebbia represents a realistic target that shouldn’t cost much to acquire.

Tanner Banks

Perhaps the Mets could really strengthen its pitching depth by acquiring Brebbia and his teammate. Banks, 32, has produced a 4.13 ERA in 48 innings. He also has produced solid strikeout and walk rates while limiting hard contact and inducing ground balls.

If New York decides between one or the other, Banks could be a better fit since he is a lefty. It’s not clear how motivated the Mets are to make a trade for a third right-handed relief pitcher. The team’s need for a solid lefty out of the bullpen grew yesterday.

Brebbia is owed the remainder of his $4 million salary and will likely be due a $1.5 million buyout on a $6 million mutual option. Banks’s trade price might rise since he is making close to the league minimum and won’t reach free agency until after 2028.

Tanner Scott

The Mets want to take on money and keep prospects in any trade, whether for a pitcher or hitte. So, a trade for Scott might not make much sense. The Marlins lefty is a top target for teams across the league. The All-Star comes with a 1.18 ERA and a 29.1 percent strikeout rate.

Due to his stellar stats and ability, many expect Miami to receive a monster package for the flamethrower, just as the Angels did for their rental closer. The Mets likely do not want to make that type offor trade, especially for a rental pitcher with the worst walk rate in the league.
