What the Yankees-Marlins Trade Brings to Both Clubs

The New York Yankees added a major reinforcement over the weekend, trading for outfielder Jazz Chisholm Jr. in a deal that involved three Yankees prospects heading down south. These prospects each hold weight and are great additions to Miami. What did the Yankees lose and what did they gain?

New York has been hungry in this market to improve the product on the field. The team has been unstable lately, compared to how they rolled through the season early on. The Yankees are clear buyers with a postseason berth in near sight.

Primarily an outfielder, Chisholm is a solid addition in the Bronx. The Bahamian-born ex-Marlin is a semi-rental option, with a contract signed through 2024. He is eligible for arbitration in 2025 and set to be a free agent in 2027.

What Did the Yankees Gain by Trading for Outfielder Jazz Chisholm Jr.?

In a nutshell, the Yankees have acquired an all-around playmaker. Chisholm spins the wheels in all parts of the game. The newly acquired Bronx Bomber brings utility to the club. He’s not only an outfielder, but can fill in at an infield spot.

He has experience at second base and shortstop when not in center field. The fact of the matter is, the Yankees outfield is stacked and there may be little opportunity for Chisholm to see much action out there.

Manager Aaron Boone wants outfielder Chisholm to fill in at third base. He would not have to utilize Gleyber Torres (who may be on his way out) or DJ LeMahieu at the hot corner. The Yankees are optimistic that their new acquisition can excel wherever he’s asked to play defensively.

What Does Chisholm Bring to the Club?

Chisholm is a playmaker. His running game is aggressive and he does not fear the arm of any catcher. This year alone, he’s swiped 22 bags in 30 attempts. His speedy tendencies lead to extra-base hits and added pressure on the defense and pitcher.

His bat is streaky and more on the dependable side. Chisholm Jr has a 10.7% barrel percentage, ranking a 74 value. This season he has 96 hits with 50 RBI, 13 home runs, and 46 runs scored. He’s slashed .249/.323/.407 so far on the year.

Chisholm Jr.’s batted ball profile is similar to 2024’s version of Sean Murphy of the Atlanta Braves and 2022’s version of Ryan Mountcastle of the Baltimore Orioles. The new Yankee utilityman will most likely be in the middle of the lineup.

What Did the Yankees Give Up to the Marlins in the Chisholm Trade?

The Yankees sent three organizationally ranked prospects to the Marlins for Jazz Chisholm Jr. The first prospect is a catcher and first baseman who initially signed in the 2018 international free-agent signing period.

Agustín Ramírez is the Headliner in Miami’s Return

Agustín Ramírez was a much-anticipated name in the Yankees system, especially for consideration behind the dish. He has climbed quickly through the ranks and is now protected on the Marlins’ 40-man roster.

Ramírez spent time between Double-A and Triple-A this season. With 90 hits on the year, he drove in 69 runs and mashed 20 home runs. Ramírez was on the come-up. and the Yankees are giving up a highly projectable hitting catcher with the potential to be a starter.

Ramírez quickly moves into the fourth-ranked spot in the Marlins’ top 30 prospect list.

Infielder Serna Brings Depth to Marlins Farm System

The Yankees signed Jared Serna in the 2019 international signing period out of Mexico. Last season, Serna proved he wasn’t just a gamble in the signings by displaying good offensive qualities.

Between Low-A and High-A, Serna recorded 144 hits, 79 RBI, and 19 home runs. His bat is above average with a compact swing and contact prone. He gets the barrel through the zone with a good plane on his launch.

Serna is a menace on the bases, generating plenty of speed and momentum. He stole 29 bags last year and is currency at 11 this year. His defense is dependable, with the ability to play three spots on the infield.

The Yankees lose their 19th-ranked prospect in Serna. However, Miami’s infield depth ranging from the majors to the next up-and-comers in the minors will delay his promotional time.

Abrahan Ramírez: The Third Wheel in the Deal

Abrahan Ramírez was also a product of the international signing period. The Yankees initially signed the youngster out of Venezuela. He plays second base, third base, and left field. In 2024’s Florida Complex League, Ramírez slashed .348/.447/.513.
