New York Mets ace Kodai Senga is back on the injured list after his first start of the 2024 season was cut short by injury. After suffering a capsule strain in his shoulder during Spring Training, Senga looked sharp in last night’s season debut. He finished the night with two earned runs on two hits and a walk over 5 ⅓ innings of work. But on an Austin Riley pop-up, the 31-year-old immediately grabbed his left calf and fell to the ground in pain. He was quickly helped off the field by the Mets training staff.

Mets Ace Kodai Senga Out For The Regular Season With Calf Strain
Shortly after exiting, the Mets announced Kodai Senga suffered a left calf strain and would undergo an MRI. Mets manager Carlos Mendoza told reporters on Saturday that Senga suffered a “high grade” calf strain and will likely miss the rest of the regular season. Though, Mendoza did not rule out a potential return for the postseason.
Senga signed a five-year, $75 million contract with New York in the 2022-23 offseason. He posted a 2.98 ERA over 166 ⅓ innings of work and finished second in NL Rookie of the Year voting in 2023. Despite high hopes for his return, the Mets will continue their playoff push without Senga. Having lost Christian Scott to a UCL sprain and now Senga, the Mets may acquire another starter at the deadline.
In a corresponding move Saturday, the Mets optioned right-hander Eric Orze to Triple-A Syracuse. New York also recalled righty Tylor Megill and activated Ryne Stanek, who arrived in a trade with the Seattle Mariners on Friday.
