The St. Louis Cardinals will celebrate the anniversary reunions of the 1964 World Series and 2004 National League Championship teams.
Both the 20th anniversary and 60th anniversary reunions will take place at Busch Stadium on Friday. Among those who will be missing from the 1964 reunion are Bob Gibson, Lou Brock, Mike Shannon, Tim McCarver, Ken Boyer, Curt Flood, and Red Schoendienst. Ray Washburn, Charlie James, and Carl Warwick will be among seven players participating in the 6:30 PM pregame ceremony before the Cardinals face the Washington Nationals.
St. Louis Cardinals to Celebrate Two Anniversary Reunions
As for the 2004 NL pennant winners, Tony La Russa, Scott Rolen, Ray Lankford, and José Oquendo will take part in a pregame ceremony. Other players currently scheduled to attend the reunion include Reggie Sanders, Tony Womack, Woody Williams, Jeff Suppan, Jason Marquis, Ray King, Steve Kline, Julián Tavárez, Cal Eldred, Marlon Anderson, Rick Ankiel, and more.
In their fifth Fall Classic matchup, the Cardinals took the New York Yankees to seven games, winning 4-3. The win would be the last win for Cardinals manager Johnny Keane. He resigned after the series and, in a cruel twist of irony, replaced Yogi Berra as manager of the Yankees. Gibson earned the World Series MVP after earning wins in both Game 5 and 7–the latter coming on two days rest. St. Louis would return to the World Series a few years later, beating the Boston Red Sox in 1967 and falling to the Detroit Tigers in 1968. The Yankees would not return to the World Series until 1976.
After taking three National League pennants during the 1980s, the St. Louis Cardinals would not return to the Fall Classic until 2004 after efforts fell short during the 1996, 2000, and 2002 National League Championship Series. The 2004 pennant would be the first of four since the turn of the century (2004, 2006, 2011, 2013). After defeating the Houston Astros in seven games, the Cardinals were swept by the Boston Red Sox in four games.
A Special Treat for Cardinals Fans
Twenty-five-thousand (25,000) fans attending the game will be able to take home a Mystery 2004 Bobblehead of either Jim Edmonds, Matt Morris or So Taguchi, presented by Coca-Cola and Dierbergs. Thanks to Scott Credit Union, fans can purchase $10 tickets to the trio of games taking place July 26-28.
