Dodgers Reliever to Have Season-Ending Surgery

According to sources within the Los Angeles Dodgers organization, right-handed reliever Kyle Hurt will have season-ending Tommy John surgery on July 30. Dodgers Nation is reporting that the procedure will be performed in Los Angeles.

Dodgers’ Kyle Hurt Out for Season with Tommy John Surgery

Hurt made the Dodgers 2024 Opening Day roster and was expected to solidify the Los Angeles bullpen. However, after just three appearances, the hurler was placed on the injured list with shoulder inflammation on April 20. He was sent to Triple-A in June after being activated. Unfortunately, Hurt wasn’t healthy for long. He was placed back on the IL within two weeks of his return, and then transferred to the 6o-day IL.

He will have his torn UCL repaired next Tuesday.

Dazzling Debut

The 25-year-old made his MLB debut on September 12, 2023, against the San Diego Padres. He went two innings, retiring Fernando Tatis Jr. Juan Soto, and Manny Machado, the heart of the Padres batting order, in the eighth inning. Hurt then closed the ninth by striking out the side.

Before getting injured this season, Hurt’s filthy repertoire garnered him a 1.35 ERA over three appearances.

Hurt’s Career History

The Miami Marlins selected Hurt in the fifth round of the 2020 MLB Draft (134th overall). However, since the 2020 minor league season was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the right-hander did not play a game that season.

Miami traded Hurt to the Dodgers along with left-handed reliever Alex Vesia in exchange for Dylan Floro in February 2021. For the next two years, he would climb the minor league ranks before being promoted to Triple-A Oklahoma City in early August of 2023. At the end of the season, Hurt was selected as the Dodgers Minor League Pitcher of the Year.

What the Future Holds for Hurt

The expected recovery time for Tommy John surgery is 12-18 months. As a result, Hurt will miss the remainder of the 2024 season and a large part of 2025 if not the whole season.
