As the trade deadline approaches, the Mets may trade one of their best prospects in return for a skillful player. Regardless of the player they could acquire, the Mets should not trade some of their most intriguing prospects.
Prospects The Mets Should Trade; Two That Shouldn’t
Trade: Brett Baty
Although Brett Baty is not much of a prospect anymore, he still has not been able to establish himself permanently in the MLB. At the beginning of the season, the Mets wanted to establish Baty permanently. However, after a bad start to Baty’s season, the Mets decided to go with Mark Vientos, who has done amazing things at third base this season for New York.
As a result, the only way Baty will ever be used is at second base, which already seems to have a prospect ready to man (Luisangel Acuna). The Mets keeping Baty in Triple-A wastes a valuable asset that New York needs. Since Mark Vientos has become the third baseman of the future for the Mets, New York should trade away Brett Baty when the time comes to make a big trade.
Don’t Trade: Ronny Mauricio
Ronny Mauricio was one of the best prospects in the Mets system before he tore his ACL, which will likely sideline him for the rest of the 2024 season. However, the switch-hitting power hitter should not be traded. Although he is technically a shortstop, Mauricio still can play second base, as he mostly played second base in the minor leagues last season. Indeed, the Met’s goal is not to remove Jeff McNeil from his position. However, the prospect hit 30 doubles and 23 home runs, drove in 71 runs, stole 24 bases, and scored 76 runs in the minor leagues last year. Mauricio is the best offensive player in the minor leagues, and the Mets should not trade him away.
Trade: Kevin Parada
Kevin Parada, one of the best players in the Mets minor league system, is an asset that could be traded. Parada, who has done well in the minor leagues, is a catcher that the Mets likely won’t need. Especially since Francisco Alvarez is just 22, and Parada is also 22. Kevin Parada may be seen as a valuable prospect for some teams that need a better catcher. Since they already have their catcher of the future, the Mets will likely not see Parada very much in the future.
Don’t Trade: Brandon Sproat
Regardless of the situation, trading away fireballer Brandon Sproat is not an excellent idea. The Mets could use Brandon Sproat this season in the bullpen and in the future. Sproat can be an essential part of the starting rotation. Sproat’s triple-digit fastball should be enough to convince the Mets that trading him is not a good idea. With Sprout’s masterful 1.97 ERA this season and reasonable control of the strike zone, he is too valuable.
Overall, the Mets should be careful with who they trade and who they shouldn’t.
