The Yankees Could Consider Two Former Pitchers At The Trade Deadline

The Yankees are considered possible buyers at the trade deadline. Pitching may be an area to address, and two former Yankees could be on the market. Could New York see a possible reunion?

The Yankees Could Consider Two Former Pitchers At The Trade Deadline

The Yankees have a well-structured staff regarding the starting rotation and the bullpen; however, pitching is always a hot topic. The entire Yankees staff has a total ERA of 3.58. In the American League, New York’s bullpen has a 3.51 ERA.

Fox Sports has the Yankees starting rotation ranked second overall in the majors, with an opponent’s average of .226. Moving towards the trade deadline, the Bronx Bombers may take a second look at their staff for areas of improvement.

The saga between Luis Gil and Nestor Cortes seems to be ironing itself out. Both arms are comfortable where they are. However, Gil may be questionable come big-game time in October. The bullpen is always an option for both of these pitchers. Can two former Yankees be of benefit to the club?

Former Yankees Starter Could Be On The Market From Queens In The Trade Deadline

The New York Mets are on the fence about their status in the 2024 trade deadline. They were once out of the race and ready to sell. Now the tables have turned, and they are currently in a wild card spot.

One bad run and the Mets can be sellers in weeks. The Mets front office would not want to lose the value that Luis Severino brings in a trade option. Severino is signed through 2024 when he will become a free agent.

The former Yankees starter has spent his entire career in New York City. Eight of his nine seasons were in the Bronx, with 2024 in Queens. Severino can be valuable to the Yankees if they see fit for another starter.

Right now, Nestor Cortes and Luis Gil get the job done in their specific roles, but both pitchers can be utilized out of the bullpen. Severino could be a great addition in the fifth spot, bringing Cortes and Gil in long relief and set-up.

Severino has a 7-3 record this season, with a 3.58 ERA in 115 innings.

Former Yankees Reliever Could Be Major Help To The Back-end Of The New York Bullpen

The Yankees bullpen always has room for improvement, especially on the back end. In a case where Clay Holmes goes back-to-back outings and saves, New York needs a secondary consideration for the next day.

Former Yankees pitcher Kirby Yates will also be on the trade block if Texas stays at the pace they’re on. Yates is a free agent at the end of the season, and his value will be significant.

Yates has had a terrific year with an All-Star appearance. The right-hander has 35 appearances with 35 and 1 / 3 innings of work. He’s recorded 17 saves this season with a 100% save rate. He also maintains an impressive 1.02 ERA.

Yates has 10 years in the big leagues, with one of those being a Yankee. The Yankees currently have a closer, Clay Holmes. Two closers on payroll will help the back end of the bullpen, especially in postseason play.
