As the New York Mets’ resurgence as a contender continues, they seem to have a big issue with relief pitching. Many have suggested that the Mets go after a starting pitcher; however, the bullpen is the main issue. As a result, the Mets should consider these relievers before the trade deadline.
Aroldis Chapman
As the Mets saw first-hand, Aroldis Chapman has problems with control and run prevention. However, with Edwin Diaz, the Mets do not need to force him into as many save situations as the Pirates do. New York could use this fireballer to get their bullpen through games but also use Chapman for situations where Diaz cannot be used. Chapman would be a useful addition, considering the Mets do not have many good left-handers. Chapman could be acquired simply because of the lack of lefties in the bullpen.
Sam Holl
Sam Holl is undoubtedly not on the radar for a lot of teams. However, the Mets could acquire Holl, who has put up excellent numbers this season, for a low price. Holl would be useful because he has only walked six batters in 30 appearances and struck out twenty-four batters. Again, Holl is a left-handed pitcher who would be an upgrade from Jake Diekman.
Dylan Floro
Dylan Floro has been one of the best relievers for the Washington Nationals this season. Floro is the workhorse of the Nationals that the Mets could certainly use. Floro has nice control of the strike zone and has just a 2.11 ERA. He has been solid throughout his career, and the Mets are aware of that, as he also pitched for the Miami Marlins. Floro would be a valuable reliever to help fill in the holes left by injured and slumping relievers.
Carlos Estevez
Carlos Estevez has been one of the best closers in the game this season, with his control of the strikeout being similar to Dedniel Nunez’s for the Mets, who has struck out 39 and walked just 5. Estevez struck out 31 and walked just 4. For a team that gives up too many walks, Estevez would be a fantastic gain, and along with his control of the strike zone, Estevez has good velocity on his fastball. Estevez could be used also in high-leverage situations where other Mets relievers have struggled.
Tanner Scott
Tanner Scott is one of the best relievers in the game. In 39 appearances this season, Scott had 36 scoreless outings and has done well to continue his upward trend. Scott has done fantastic in run prevention because he has walked 25 hitters, which is unsuitable for relievers. However, regardless of those walks, he controls games. Most of the runs allowed by Scott have been from home runs; both home runs resulted in his only blown saves. Scott would undoubtedly give the Mets a huge upgrade for the bullpen.
Overall, the Mets would love to upgrade their bullpen more than anything at this trade deadline, and these players might get the job done.
