Trade Deadline Options at Second Base for the Yankees

The New York Yankees are on a cool-down as the Major League Baseball All-Star festivities inch closer. The team’s slide is concerning and various holes in the roster are being highlighted. One of those concerns is the right side of the infield, primarily second base. The Yankees may want to shop for an offensive-minded second baseman before the trade deadline.

Early in his career, second baseman Gleyber Torres was a key piece for the future of the Yankees. 2018, 2019, 2022, and 2023 were all years of 20+ home runs and 65+ RBI for Torres. However, his contract year has been dreadful so far, specifically on the offensive end.

Gleyber Torres’ Subpar 2024 Numbers

Torres was on a slight turn of fate in the past week or so, however, it is clear that his contribution won’t exactly help the Yankees situation. He currently has a .224 batting average and a .298 on-base percentage.

Torres has 72 hits in 321 at-bats. He has eight home runs, 34 RBI, and has struck out 82 times while walking 33 times. He has a total of 110 bases while only scoring 41 times. His offensive production hasn’t been there, his clutch tendencies haven’t existed, and he’s barely on base.

Aside from a slight concern offensively at first base, the Yankees may want to consider trading for a second baseman with a dependable bat.

Second Baseman Trade Options for Yankees

Rockies 2B Brendan Rodgers

The Colorado Rockies continue to struggle as a ball club. The Rockies sit at a .351 win-loss percentage with a 33-61 record. They are at the bottom of the National League West. Colorado is expected to be one of many sellers at the trade deadline.

Second baseman Brendan Rodgers may be one Rockies player on the trading block. He is signed through 2024 with arbitration eligibility in 2025. The Rockies may find an opportunity to capitalize on shipping him out as a rental.

Rodgers may not be the most elite second baseman on the market, but he’s a grinder and will stick it to make things happen. He’s a ball-in-play type guy with attributes to make things happen on the base paths. Rodgers is a contact hitter and can hit gap to gap, making good contact with quality at-bats.

Reds May Deal Jonathan India

The Cincinnati Reds are last in their division with only a .479 win percentage, but they are still in the Wild Card conversation. Based on results from the next few weeks, the Reds could be sellers. Second baseman Jonathan India could be on the move if that’s the case.

India has another year left on his contract, as he’s signed through 2025, being a free agent in 2026. Similar to Rodgers, India wouldn’t be a powerhouse blow-away acquisition. However, his ability to put the ball in play and play his position could benefit the Yankees.

India is slashing .276/.375/.419 this season with seven home runs, 37 RBI, and 83 hits.

Spencer Horwitz a Possibility if Blue Jays Blow Up the Team

The Blue Jays have been in the trade deadline conversation heavily lately. Toronto has put Kevin Kiermaier on waivers, and this is just the beginning. The Blue Jays may be on the verge of a major sell-off, and this could include some young talent.

Spencer Horwitz won’t be a free agent until 2030 and the Jays may want to retain him. However, he could be included in a package that sends high-end players over for a yard sale.

Horwitz has shown the ability to play in the big leagues and can be a potential future piece at his position. This could be a potential packaged piece for New York, whether they retain him or flip him in another deal.
