Guardians Reinstate Pitcher From 60-Day IL

The Cleveland Guardians have activated pitcher Gavin Williams from the 60-day IL and have optioned struggling pitcher Triston McKenzie to Triple-A. To make room available for the 2021 draft pick on the 40-man roster, the Guardians DFA’d righty Darren McCaughan.

Guardians Activate Gavin Williams from IL

During one of his rehab sessions on June 27th, Williams pitched well at Triple-A and got up to 82 pitches. He threw four innings, allowing three hits, one run, two walks, six strikeouts, and 16 Whiffs. Williams made a total of five rehab starts. The Guardians sent McKenzie to the minors to work out his pitching problems. McKenzie has struggled and hasn’t passed the third inning in his last three starts. Williams made his MLB debut with the Guardians in 2023. The righty has spent the whole season on the IL due to elbow discomfort. He is set to make his first start on Wednesday, July 3rd. The Guardians will face the Chicago White Sox, who are currently 24-62.

This should be a good way for Williams to start the season after coming off the IL, providing him with a start against the worst team in baseball. It is anticipated that this outing should be smooth sailing for him. Last season, Williams recorded a 3.29 ERA with a 3-5 record. In the 2023 season, he showed better control of his top-notch pitches. He was also a top prospect for the Guardians, and back in 2020, he made adjustments and revamped his fastball command. The Guardians are undoubtedly happy to get their starter back, and hopefully, he remains healthy for the remainder of this season. If he can pick up where he left off last season and follow the same groove, it will help mend and clean up the mess that McKenzie conjured up during his absence. Williams is just 24 years old from Fayetteville, North Carolina.
