Padres Bringing Back Reliever To Bolster Bullpen

The Padres have desperately needed bullpen help. Many looked for help via trade but neglected to examine the pool of free agents. On Friday, five-year veteran relief pitcher Nabil Crismatt announced on his Instagram he was back with the Friars. This comes at just the right time, with the Padres looking to capitalize on momentum after sweeping the Washington Nationals and traveling to Boston to face the red-hot Red Sox. Crismatt adds depth and length to a bullpen that needs a consistent arm to go multiple innings.

Padres Bringing Back Reliever To Bolster Bullpen

The Columbian right-hander made his debut with the St. Louis Cardinals on August 17, 2020, after a commendable eight-year stint in the minor leagues. Following six appearances for the Redbirds, he chose free agency and joined the Padres on December 17, 2020. Over three seasons with the Padres, Crismatt showcased his talent in 102 games, pitching over 159 innings and maintaining a 3.81 ERA. Unfortunately, injuries plagued his 2023 season, leading to his designation for assignment and eventual free agency. He briefly joined the Arizona Diamondbacks but only made one appearance before opting for free agency once more.

In 2024, Crismatt was a member of both the Los Angeles Dodgers and Texas Rangers organizations. He made five appearances for the Dodgers, giving up just two runs across seven innings of work, last appearing on May 14 against the Giants. Following his designation from the Dodgers, Crismatt signed a minor-league deal with the Rangers, pitching in eight games for the Triple-A Round Rock Express. He allowed nine runs across 11 innings of work for the squad.

Crismatt’s pitching style is a five-pitch mix, with a strong reliance on the breaking ball. His change-up is his standout pitch, complemented by a four-seamer and a curveball. He also incorporates a sinker and a slider, although not as frequently. For the Padres, Crismatt’s return is a ray of hope for their struggling bullpen. With the guidance of pitching coach Ruben Niebla, he is expected to regain his form and make an immediate impact, sparking optimism among the team and its fans.
