Guardians Place Outfielder on IL with Rib Inflammation

The Cleveland Guardians placed center fielder Will Brennan on the 10-day IL Thursday with rib cage inflammation. The move is retroactive to June 25, so he will be eligible to return next Friday.

Guardians Place Will Brennan (Ribs) on 10-Day IL

The 26-year-old outfielder is in his second full season with Cleveland and third overall. Brennan made his MLB debut in 2022 at age 24, appearing in only 11 games. When he got more playing time in 2023, he showed signs of becoming a steady major-league hitter. In 138 games, he hit .266 with five homers, 41 RBI, and 13 steals. His OPS was only .655, but he bumped that up to .730 so far this season. Brennan is also showing a bit more power in 2024, with eight homers and 24 RBI in 68 games. While power is not his strength, adding more of it to his game would make him a more well-rounded hitter.

Will Brennan’s addition to the IL continued a busy day of roster moves for Cleveland. According to reports, the Guardians signed pitcher Matthew Boyd to a major league deal earlier Thursday. They also continued reaching into the minor leagues for help in the wake of injuries. Cleveland recalled infielder José Tena and right-handed reliever Darren McCaughan from Triple-A Columbus. Right-handed starter Xzavion Curry was optioned back to Triple-A.

Tena appeared in 18 games for Cleveland last season, hitting .226 with two doubles and three RBI. McCaughan made one appearance for the Guardians on June 23. Despite giving up two earned runs in two innings, he recorded a hold in a 6-5 win over the Toronto Blue Jays. Curry was a bigger piece of the Guardians staff last season, making nine starts while also making 32 appearances out of the bullpen. In four games this season (three starts), he has a 5.74 ERA and a 1.340 WHIP with nine strikeouts in 15 2/3 innings.
