As the New York Mets continue to succeed in 2024, some still suggest they sell away their soon-to-be free-agent starting pitchers. This might be to maximize their return when they can; however, it also might be wise for them to see themselves as contenders still. The Mets could keep what they have and do nothing before the deadline. However, David Stearns is not known for being bold when making decisions.
One Pitcher The Mets Should Trade, And One They Should Keep
Consider Trading: Sean Manea
Sean Manea was considered New York’s best free agency signing earlier in the season, especially since he performed very well in many starts. Although it’s clear that although Manea provides stability in the starting rotation, he has been rather mediocre. Manea could be a valuable asset to many teams with struggling rotations, especially teams with injuries like the Houston Astros or Atlanta Braves. Manea is also pretty expensive for New York, considering that Christian Scott can take his spot.
The Mets wouldn’t get a crazy return, but New York could still get a positive return. Scott played well, striking out 25 while walking just 6; he had a nice ERA of 3.90 in 5 starts. Secondly, the Mets offensively were sleeping when he started, so he might be even better now that the Mets have a better offense. If the Mets wanted to give Scott more time, they could still call up Jose Butto, who was good when he started for New York earlier this season. Butto struck out 38 while walking 21 in his short-lived time with the Mets in 2024, showing the ability to strikeout hitters, although he did have a problem with walks. Trading Manea certainly does not need to happen; however, it could help with the starting rotation, especially when using prospects more.
Keep in Flushing: Luis Severino
Luis Severino has not been known this season for strikeouts, but he dazzled the Cubs with 10 k’s on Sunday. This start solidified that Severino is the best starter the Mets have this season. Severino, a former ace for the New York Yankees, has had a nice bounce-back year. He’s been the ace for the Mets. If the Mets need something, they need the ability to have a couple of really good pitchers to push them into contention. Kodai Senga is an undisputed ace coming into this season and Kodai Senga could use help in the starting rotation. If the Mets are at a buying mentality, Severino stays.
Even if the Mets are looking to shake around the rotation, Severino should not be expendable. There are other pitchers that the Mets should trade and should not trade. Despite all the speculation, though, Severino should not be traded. Overall, the Mets shaking up the lineup is not a bad idea. However, some pitchers should stay, while others should be expendable. Severino can do many useful things. So can Manea. However, Severino’s bounce-back season should be very valuable for the team.
