Yankees Place All-Star Slugger on 10-Day Injured List

The New York Yankees announced this morning that they’ve placed Giancarlo Stanton on the 10-day injured list. Infielder Oswald Peraza was recalled as a corresponding move, per El Extrabase’s Daniel Alvarez-Montes. Manager Aaron Boone indicated that Stanton was scheduled to undergo tests today to determine the severity of the issue but noted that Stanton was in “good spirits.”

“We lnow it’s at least going to be those 10 days. So we’ll see the severity of it,” Boone said Sunday. “I will say G was in pretty good spirits last night, so hopefully that’s a result of it hopefully not being to severe.”

Stanton missed 266 of 708 games in the past five seasons. He appeared to be walking awkwardly as he exited the lock room on Saturday night. Boone said Aaron Judge will likely see more designated days while Stanton is sidelined. Trent Grisham will be the primary outfield replacement. Grisham was hitting .113 with four home runs and 10 RBI in 21 outfield starts.

“I’ll cyclye som guts through that [DH] spot a little bit more,” Boone said. “Probably a little uptick for Aaron in that spot.”

Stanton is hitting .246 with 18 home runs and 45 RBI. He’s in the midst of a healthy season with the Yankees since he played in 158 games in 2018, his first season after he was acquried from the Miami Marlins.

Peraza, one of the Yankees’ top prospects, has been mediocre at best in the minors this season. His .180/.323/.281 slash line is nothing to behold as he’s unlikely to be a solution for replacing Stanton. Instead, Boone said Pereaza was “up for the day” to provide versatility and athleticisim off the bench.

Stanton’s injury also comes at a very inconvenient time. Boone said the Yankkes would considered promoting top prospect Jasson Dominguez to replace Stanton, if he were healthy. Dominiguez is expected to miss eight weeks with a left oblique strain.
