Yankees Place Middle Reliever and Red-Hot Starter on IL

The New York Yankees are in the midst of a large roster shakeup this week, with several players shelved with injuries and replacements coming in. It started with Anthony Rizzo and Jasson Dominguez each getting hurt over the weekend. The Yankees promoted first base prospect Ben Rice on Monday to take Rizzo’s roster spot. The latest developments from Monday involve reliever Ian Hamilton and young starter Cody Poteet each going to the injured list. Hamilton has a right lat strain and will be shut down from baseball activity for three to four weeks. Poteet is on the 15-day IL with a right triceps strain, and there is no word on whether his absence will stretch longer than that.

The Yankees managed to avoid the injury bug early this season. It is a major reason they now own a record of 50-24, the best in MLB. However, the chaos of 2023 is returning in full force in mid-June. It started with Clarke Schmidt, who emerged as a top starter for New York early this season, going down with a lat strain similar to Hamilton’s. On Monday, the Yankees announced Schmidt would be transferred to the 60-day IL.

After the injury bug started affecting position players over the weekend, the pitching staff now takes a further hit. Hamilton has been one of the more highly used middle relievers on the team since last season. Although he had better numbers in 2023 than he does this season, he still averages over a strikeout per inning. He has 30 punchouts in 29 2/3 frames. When Hamilton returns, he might want to keep an eye on his increased walk rate, which has led to his increased ERA and WHIP this season.

Poteet has emerged as one of the most pleasant surprises for the 2024 Yankees, albeit in limited action. Called upon as an occasional spot starter, beginning in Gerrit Cole‘s absence early this year, Poteet has shined in the role. In four starts, the 29-year-old is 3-0 with a 2.14 ERA, a 1.048 WHIP, and a 190 ERA+. Before this season, Poteet had not pitched since 2022 with the Miami Marlins. Having come up the year before, he saw time in both the rotation and bullpen in Miami. It appears the Yankees unlocked his talent as a starter, and will hope he can keep it up upon returning.

New York also added left-handers Anthony Misiewicz and Clayton Andrews to the major league roster on Monday.
