The Colorado Rockies have been struggling recently by losing six out of their last eight games and are 17.0 games back of the first-place Los Angeles Dodgers. While, at times, their offense has been at a standstill, the pitching has undoubtedly been a huge problem. Currently, four out of the five starters have a losing record. This has been a huge issue for Colorado. Either the starters can’t finish the job during their time on the mound, or the bullpen blows the game wide open during the mid or late innings. If the offense can’t produce, the Rockies pitching staff must hold it down and make each game as tightly competitive as possible. It’s key for this team if they want to be successful this month. 29-year-old pitcher Cal Quantrill has been exceptional and the best of the Rockies starters so far, this regular season.
29-Year-Old Pitcher Is The Best Of The Rockies Starters
Quantrill has appeared on the mound 13 times this season for Colorado. He has a 5-4 record, which is better than any Rockies starter by three games. Through 73 innings pitched, he has put up an ERA of 3.58. Quantrill has given up 29 runs on 66 hits with 51 strikeouts. Going into May, Quantrill had a 0-3 record. However, he earned four wins in five starts, which changed his season around completely. So far this month, he’s gone 1-1. On June 1st, the Rockies starter had trouble giving up four runs on nine hits in four and one-third innings pitched. During his next start, he pitched five solid innings, allowing just three hits and four walks in a 3-2 win over the St. Louis Cardinals.
While Quantrill has five wins on the season, he’s not known to be a strikeout pitcher. In his last several starts each this season; he’s recorded just one strikeout. His season-high is nine strikeouts. This occurred on May 3rd when he went 7 2/3 innings, allowing just three hits during a 3-2 victory. Even though he’s not much of a strikeout pitcher, he still ranks second out of any Rockies pitcher, trailing Ryan Feltner by one strikeout. The Rockies starter has had three starts allowing no runs and three where he allowed four or more runs. Quantrill has the second-best ERA out of any Rockies starter. He trails Austin Gomber, who has a 3.38 ERA. However, Gomber has a 1-3 record in 12 starts this season.
Can Quantrill Continue To Be Successful On The Mound?
Th best season of his career was back in 2022 with the Cleveland Guardians. In 32 starts, he put up a 15-5 record. Through 186 and one-third innings pitched, Quantrill recorded a 3.38 ERA and 128 strikeouts. He certainly has the tools to be a quality starter. Perhaps be the best starter for the Rockies this season. Even though he may not achieve the same success he did back in 2022, Quantrill could help the Rockies achieve a better record than last season. He’ll look to continue his outstanding play on the mound and push Colorado closer to the fourth-place Arizona Diamondbacks in the National League West division.
