Jared Jones & Paul Skenes

The Pirates are adding a few quality starters and having Skenes and Jones pitch in two—to three-inning appearances out of the bullpen when they get to September and October. They have a limit on how many innings they can pitch this year, which allows them to still be available in the postseason. Jared Jones had an amazing putting against the Dodgers on June 4th. He dominated with electric pitching and was filthy on the mound. At just 22 years old, he threw 100 pitches, gave up no runs, and had six strikeouts. It was a very impressive outing against a hot team like the Dodgers. Jones earned a spot in the starting rotation at the beginning of May and has been impressive. Jones now has 52 strikeouts and five walks through seven starts, demonstrating the kind of dominance usually seen by players with more experience in the Majors.

Paul Skenes was also impressive against Shohei Ohtani, striking him out with a fastball. Skeenes has been incredible, and Rosenthal talked about how he believes that “they’ve transformed the team.”They represent two dynamic and highly skilled fireball pitchers for the Pirates. Skenes had an impressive outing on May 29th against the Tigers, striking out nine batters.

Why They Need To Be Aggressive At the Trade Deadline

The Pirates have been known to have players that haven’t developed all that well. In addition, the team is known for not spending money. However, Rosenthal believes their prospects will continue to be big contributors this season. He talked about how you want to see them added at the deadline. People want to see more from the Pirates. Rosenthal believes the biggest takeaway is that these two guys have transformed the team, allowing them to.

He thinks they need to be assertive about adding players by the deadline. He talked about Nick Gonzalez and how he’s done a good job at second base. Gonzalez is also so hot right now offensively for the Pirates. The Pirates need to focus on the strengths they have with their team and utilize them to make a push in the standings in the NL. Rosenthal emphasizes that the Pirates should be aggressive with the trade deadline if they want to stand out.
