Projecting Phillies Promotions

Projecting Philadelphia Phillies promotions is complicated. With Cristian Pache and Ranger Suarez coming off the injured list in the coming days, call-ups might not still need to attend. MLB rules state that each team must expand their active roster from 26 players to 28 players after August 31. A player must be on a team’s 40-man roster to be added to the active roster. The rules also state that teams can carry 14 pitchers on their roster during this time.

Projecting Phillies Promotions In Coming Days

Currently, the Phillies have a full 40-man roster. Therefore, to add a player to the 40-man roster, someone else would need to be designated for assignment. The Phillies would likely need to add someone to the 40-man roster. There is also the potential for a player to get sent down or go on the injured list. This would mean someone else would need to be called up. Here are some potential candidates for the Phillies to call up while the rosters are expanded.

Connor Brogdon (Pitcher)

Brogdon is one of the more experienced candidates of the players on this list. Furthermore, Brogdon has made 139 appearances in the majors. In 27 appearances for the Phillies this season, Brogdon has a 2-1 record with a 4.03 ERA and 26 strikeouts. At Triple-A Lehigh Valley, Brogdon has a 1-1 record with a 6.23 ERA and 27 strikeouts in 19 appearances this season. If Brogdon were to get called up, it would likely be due to his experience at the significant league level.

Rafael Marchan (Catcher)

With rosters expanding, adding a third catcher is always a good idea. In 23 appearances for the Phillies between 2020 and 2021, Marchan has a .267/.323/.417 line with two home runs and seven RBI. In addition, with Triple-A Lehigh Valley this season, Marchan has a .283/.373/.384 line with one home run and 16 RBI in 41 games. Having Marchan come to the active roster would allow for more flexibility. This could see J.T. Realmuto having extra off days or playing first base occasionally if Marchan were to be promoted.

Yunior Marte (Pitcher)

Marte is another pitcher who has major-league experience and could be called up. So far this season with the Phillies, Marte has a 1-1 record with a 5.14 ERA and 33 strikeouts in 36 appearances. Additionally, in 15 outings with Triple-A Lehigh Valley this season, Marte has a 3-1 record with a 2.16 ERA and 20 strikeouts. Having an extra pitcher for the stretch run is a good idea. Last season, Marte was with the San Francisco Giants and joined the Phillies during an offseason trade between the two teams.

Kody Clemens (Infielder/Outfielder)

The son of Roger Clemens was acquired from the Detroit Tigers in an offseason trade. That trade also saw the Phillies receive Gregory Soto. In 49 appearances with the Phillies this season, Clemens has a .230/.277/.367 line with four home runs and 13 RBI. With Triple-A Lehigh Valley this season, Clemens has a .250/.379/.506 line with 11 home runs and 33 RBI. On the defensive side, Clemens brings versatility. Clemens has appeared at all four infield positions and the corner outfield spots during his MLB career.

Nick Nelson (Pitcher)

Nelson is another experienced arm the Phillies have at Triple-A Lehigh Valley. While Nelson has not appeared in the majors this season, he has 69 career outings. In 47 appearances last season that included two starts, Nelson had a 3-2 record with a 4.85 ERA and 69 strikeouts. So far this season at Triple-A, Nelson has a 6-2 record with a 4.36 ERA and 59 strikeouts in 16 starts. Nelson will be the choice if the Phillies want to call up a pitcher who can start if needed and serves as a long reliever.

Darick Hall (First Baseman)

Adding Hall to the active roster would give the Phillies another option at first base. In 18 games with the Phillies this season, Hall has a .167/.196/.241 line with one home run and three RBI. In 54 games with Triple-A this season, Lehigh Valley Hall has a .308/.388/.577 line with 15 home runs and 43 RBI. Hall’s power in the minor leagues this season is enough to warrant a call-up. The roster will likely need more space for Hall. Hall should be given another opportunity with the Phillies if the chance presents itself.
