Baseball Bets for July 25th

The Headliner: Reds @ Brewers

In game two of this early week series, the Cincinnati Reds once again take on the Milwaukee Brewers. On the mound for the Reds will be rookie lefty Andrew Abbott. In nine starts, Abbott has a 2.10 ERA across 55 2/3 innings with 57 strikeouts and a 0.92 WHIP. Over his last seven, he carries a 2.66 ERA across 44 innings with 47 strikeouts and a 0.86 WHIP. Abbott has not performed as well on the road. In four road starts, he sports a 2.86 ERA across 22 innings with 20 strikeouts and a 1.32 WHIP. This will mark his fourth start against the Brewers. In the first three, Abbott pitched to a 4.41 ERA across 16 1/3 innings with 15 strikeouts and a 1.23 WHIP. Not only will this be his fourth time facing the Brewers this season, but it will also be his third time doing so this month.

The Brewers will counter with Corbin Burnes. In 20 starts, Burnes has a 3.49 ERA across 121 1/3 innings with 125 strikeouts and a 1.06 WHIP. Over his last seven, he carries a 3.71 ERA across 43 2/3 innings with 50 strikeouts and a 1.03 WHIP. Burnes has performed worse at home this season. In nine home starts, he carries a 4.13 ERA across 52 1/3 innings with 51 strikeouts and a 1.22 WHIP. Burnes is facing the same familiarity situation as Abbott in tonight’s start. Through his first three starts against the Reds, Burnes carries a 2.50 ERA across 18 innings with 26 strikeouts and a 0.94 WHIP. Give the nod to the veteran in this one, and watch him rack up the strikeouts like he did in his previous start against the Reds.

The Play: Brewers ML (-156) – 1.5U

Bonus Player Prop: Burnes Over 7.5 Strikeouts (-145) – 0.5U

Sellers Battle in the Cellar: Pirates @ Padres

In game two of this series, the Pittsburgh Pirates look to take another win over the San Diego Padres. On the mound for the Pirates will be veteran lefty Rich Hill. In 20 starts this season, Hill carries a 4.84 ERA across 109 2/3 innings with 94 strikeouts and a 1.45 WHIP. Over his last seven, he carries a 6.03 ERA across 37 1/3 innings with 27 strikeouts and a 1.61 WHIP. While still not great, Hill has been better on the road this season. In seven road starts, he sports a 4.70 ERA across 38 1/3 innings with 37 strikeouts and a 1.41 WHIP. This will be his second start against the Padres this season. In his first, he allowed four runs (all earned) on nine hits, and two walks, and struck out four in six innings, while still picking up the win.

In what could be the last time he takes the mound as a Padre, lefty Blake Snell will counter. The NL Cy Young contender boasts a 2.67 ERA across 108 innings and 20 starts with 143 strikeouts and a 1.28 WHIP. Over his last seven, he carries a nice 0.69 ERA across 39 innings with 62 strikeouts and a 1.18 WHIP. Snell has not pitched as well at home this season. In nine home starts, he boasts a 2.98 ERA across 48 1/3 innings with 70 strikeouts and a 0.85 WHIP. This will also be Snell’s second start against the Pirates this season. In his first, he allowed two runs (both earned) on three hits and two walks while striking out 10 through six innings. Despite the valiant effort, he was saddled with the loss in that outing. Back the heavy favorites in this one.

Battle for the North East: Orioles @ Phillies

After taking game one of this three-game set, the Baltimore Orioles look to win the series against the Philadelphia Phillies in today’s matchup. On the mound for the Orioles will be former Philly Kyle Gibson. In 21 starts this season, Gibson has a 4.76 ERA across 121 innings with 98 strikeouts and a 1.36 WHIP. Over his last seven, he carries a 6.63 ERA across 38 innings with 40 strikeouts and a 1.47 WHIP. Gibson has performed much better on the road this season. In 12 road starts, he carries a 4.23 ERA across 72 1/3 innings with 57 strikeouts and a 1.20 WHIP. As a former member of the Phillies, Gibson has pitched at Citizen’s Bank Park 23 times. In those games, he carries a 4.65 ERA across 129 2/3 innings with 102 strikeouts and a 1.26 WHIP.

The Phillies will counter with Taijuan Walker. In 20 starts this season, Walker has a 4.11 ERA across 107 1/3 innings with 94 strikeouts and a 1.26 WHIP. Over his last seven, he carries a 2.72 ERA across 43 innings with 41 strikeouts and a 1.09 WHIP. Walker has pitched much better at home this season. In nine home starts, he boasts a 2.76 ERA across 49 innings with 47 strikeouts and a 1.04 WHIP. Despite this being his first season with the Phillies, Walker was formerly a New York Met, so he also has a healthy dose of experience pitching at Citizen’s Bank Park. In 14 starts there, he carries a 3.58 ERA across 73 innings with 66 strikeouts and a 1.11 WHIP. Look for the Phillies to snap this losing streak before it begins.
