The Giants’ Key to Success at the Trade Deadline

As the end of July approaches, the San Francisco Giants are looking for ways to improve their roster. This step may be the key to success in the remainder of the Giants’ season and postseason. But many fans no doubt remember last year. San Francisco completely fell apart at the last minute, and their skid included a seven-game losing streak. In the end, they did not clearly buy or sell at the deadline. 2023 has to be different.

The Giants’ Key to Success

Digging Deep Into the Details

It would be nothing new if we merely looked at the situation and said that the Giants need to be more aggressive. In fact, they had aggressive intentions in the past that never came to fruition. As previously mentioned, they fell apart at an inopportune time in 2022. Were it not for the bad timing involved, they no doubt would have made more of a move toward contention.

Though it was difficult to admit it at the time, the Giants were doomed immediately following last year’s deadline. They meant to strike a balance between contending in the present and preparing for the future. But who actually expected them to make the playoffs without reinforcements? Make no mistake, it would have been far better for them to just sell than to do what they did.

What Will the Front Office Do in a Worst-Case Scenario?

Obviously, this is not what we naturally want to think about. There is every reason to envision the Giants rising to the top of the NL West and surprising everybody even more than they already have. But there is still a question that deserves an answer. What would Farhan Zaidi and the front office do if the Giants went on a skid right before the deadline?

The key to success will be a focus on winning now. The Giants have shown their see-saw tendencies a lot this year. Disappointments have come along with the heights. The main threat present is the possibility of a low-end performance at the worst time.

So there is an element of courage that Zaidi needs to have. There are a lot of scenarios to be prepared for. What the Giants need right now is for the front office to not give up in the face of adversity while a reasonable probability of success still exists. The team can’t keep rebuilding forever. One of these years, they have to burst onto the scene, and there doesn’t appear to be a better time than the present to do it.

The Giants Must Follow Through on Being Aggressive

Thankfully, San Francisco’s commitment to being aggressive appears to be genuine. The Giants’ key to success is following through on this position based on what their players have shown in the first half. The best thing would be for them to cruise their way up to the end of the month. But whatever their on-field results over the next couple of weeks, it’s been sufficiently demonstrated that 2023 is not a year to give up on.
