Mets Owner Steve Cohen Will Speak to the Press on Wednesday

Steve Cohen Mets

When Wall Street billionaire Steve Cohen bought the New York Mets from The Wilpon family, many Mets fans saw this as a breath of fresh air. In a lot of ways, it certainly has been. The Mets have been well run under Cohen and Cohen being a huge Mets fan definitely helps matters. He has improved the fan experience at Citi Field, making the ballpark a must for any baseball fan. Cohen has also gone as far as honoring the Mets past. A statue for Tom Seaver. Retiring the numbers of Keith Hernandez and Willie Mays. Making the restaurant at the park that used to be McFadden’s the K Korner. Putting fan-favorite broadcasters Howie Rose and Gary Cohen in the Mets Hall of Fame. Honoring another fan-favorite broadcaster, Bob Murphy, with a marker up by the retired numbers. Placing it right next to Ralph Kiner’s marker. Above all else though, he has spent money on players. However, money doesn’t always equal winning.

Steve Cohen To Speak to the Press on Wednesday

While the Mets have improved off the field, on the field still needs work. The money Cohen has spent in his first three years as team owner has resulted in a 213-189 record at the moment. With two losing seasons in three years looking very likely. Despite acquiring the likes of Francisco Lindor, Justin Verlander, Max Scherzer, Starling Marte, and hiring manager Buck Showalter, the Mets have still failed to win consistently. This year has brought a whole different element with championship expectations being dashed thanks to a combination of everything, really. Bad Pitching? Check. Inconsistent offense? Check. Questionable managerial decisions? Check. Bad mistakes on the field? check. Bad bullpen? check. You name it, it’s what the Mets have been doing all season and their owner isn’t happy. Cohen announced via his Twitter that he will be speaking to the press before Wednesday’s game against the Milwaukee Brewers. A presser that every Mets fan will be paying close attention to as the team continues to disappoint. Cohen tweeted:

What To Expect from Steve Cohen?

We’ve seen Cohen plenty of times in the “Uncle Steve” persona. That persona is what made Mets fans love him so much. We’ve also seen him when he gets agitated. Whether it’s tweeting out his frustration on the Mets offense during the 2021 campaign via a Tweet.

Or when he expressed his anger at pitcher Steven Matz’s agent, Rob Martin when the Mets were trying to bring the former Mets and Long Island native back to Queens. Once again, via a Tweet.

When Cohen speaks to the media, it’s hard to imagine we won’t see the “angry” Cohen compared to “Uncle Steve”. Or at least a version of it. Right now, “Uncle Steve” isn’t needed with the team currently on pace for 89 losses. He’ll certainly talk about how massively disappointed he is in the teams’ performance and how everybody needs to step up. Talking about how he and everybody in the front office didn’t see this coming. Also, Cohen is not going to be happy with the empty seats he’ll see at Mets home games at the rate they’re going. As passionate and die-hard as Mets fans are, they want to see a winner more than anything.

Upcoming Mets Coaching Changes?

Cohen has never made any midseason managerial changes before, and the chances of him announcing Showalter’s firing at this presser are slim. Firing a veteran manager who has won multiple Manager of The Year awards right before a game and in the middle of a series seems unlikely. Plus, the All-Star break is coming up. Again, Cohen has never done it before so there’s a first time for everything. As far as pitching coach Jeremy Hefner and hitting coach Jeremy Barnes are concerned, their seats are definitely heating up. Regardless, everybody in Queens is eager to see what Cohen will say or do next.
