With the lockout finally over, it’s nearly time to play ball once again. In light of the shortened timeframe, MLB has announced an updated spring schedule for all 30 teams. The New York Yankees have 18 spring training games on the schedule, starting on March 18. The games will run through April 5, and the Yanks will then have a day off prior to Opening Day against the Boston Red Sox. Notably, there will be no split-squad games for the Bombers. Game times have yet to be announced. Here’s a closer look at the Yankees’ 2022 Grapefruit League schedule.
Breaking Down the Yankees’ Spring Training Schedule
The Yanks’ spring slate begins with two road games. They will face the Pittsburgh Pirates on March 18 and the Baltimore Orioles the next day. March 20 will be the opener at Steinbrenner Field when the Yankees take on the Detroit Tigers. New York will have an even split of nine home games and nine road games. Although there are 18 games on the exhibition slate, the Yankees will face only six different teams. They face the Tigers six times, the Philadelphia Phillies and Toronto Blue Jays four times each, the Pirates and Orioles twice each, and the Atlanta Braves once.
All the repeat opponents mean the Yankees will not get a look at some notable teams until the regular season. These include the Red Sox, the Tampa Bay Rays, and the Houston Astros. It’s almost certain that MLB was working with some logistical difficulties in scheduling these games late, but it would’ve been nice for New York to be able to scope out more of their likely competitors in the American League. The games against Toronto should prove the most interesting in that department. Below is the full spring schedule for the Yankees, with times still TBD:
