Gavin Lux was injured during the Los Angeles Dodgers vs San Diego Padres game Wednesday night after crashing into the center-field wall in the top of the sixth inning. The centerfielder was chasing down a Wil Meyers fly ball but the ball popped out of his glove as he slammed hard into the padded wall. The play allowed the Padres to take a 6-5 lead.
Lux was able to sit up after falling down, but he kept grabbing at his right shoulder and rubbing his right eye. Dodger’s trainer, Yosuke Nakajima, and manager Dave Roberts ran out to check on Lux. Lux was able to get up on his own, but he walked off the field slowly. Cody Bellinger came in replacing Lux, and ended up hitting a game-tying home run in the bottom of the eighth inning.
Roberts called it a “neck stinger” but didn’t say if Lux would need to take a trip to the injured list. They are taking it day by day and seeing how Lux feels. The team won’t know more until Thursday morning, but with Bellinger available, Lux is likely to get the day off.
Gavin Lux Injured at Wrong Time
Gavin Lux’s injury couldn’t have come at a worse time. Lux has been on a hot streak in September and has been a big reason that the Dodgers are keeping pace with the San Fransisco Giants. In his last 15 games, Lux was hitting .383/.473/.532.
Lux has also been helping the Dodgers by being versatile. With the Dodgers acquisition of Trea Turner at the trade deadline, Lux was out of a position. The Dodgers sent him down to Triple-A Oklahoma City to learn how to play the outfield. Lux was recalled on September 10 and started his hot streak. Lux filled in for the injured AJ Pollock and slid over to center once he returned.
With the postseason less than a week away, Lux’s injury may cost him a roster spot. The 23-year-old was also left off the postseason roster last year when the Dodgers won the World Series.
